So I'm moving to SF in August, and I have no idea what to expect (apart from the weed, i can't wait to smoke in a decriminalized environment)! Advice anyone?

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.

This. Chewing bubblegum doesn't solve anything, smoking pot does.

You do know it's only legal if you look like this?

It is.

If you mean dangerous areas, Ingleside, Bayview, Visitacion Valley, the Excelsior, and Hunter's Point--all kind of in southeast SF--can get pretty bad. There's only one bus that goes into Hunter's Point though, so you shouldn't end up there by mistake, but you can check the bus lines to be safe. The Mission district can also get pretty sketchy in certain areas with drug dealing, and there are a couple of latino gangs there. Wait, here's a quote from a website:

Okay people.... Lovely San Francisco's Mission district.... It has the biggest Latino population in the city so if are looking for good Mexican food and what not this is the place to go... but as said before this isn't the greatest area... Nortenos and Surenos, the two Hispanic gangs that are in The Mission... Nortenos claim red and the number 14, X4 and also seen as XIV, and Surenos claim blue and the number 13, X3 or XIII... through out the Mission there is gang violence but I believe that certain streets are more heavy with certain gangs, from what I've seen and heard Surenos gravitate more towards the lower streets... for example 10-19... where as the Nortenos gravitate towards the higher numbers for example 20-25... 16th and ______ is heavily populated with Surenos... 22nd and 24th are Norteno territory especially 24th... Whenever going into the mission no matter your race do not wear any clothing or such that is red or blue because there is a chance violence may be directed towards you in many ways such as drive bys etc...
Be careful!

When this fellow says "20-25" he is referring to the avenues. South of Market (SOMA) and parts of downtown can also get pretty sketchy, especially at night, so just be careful and ignore any suspicious folks who try to talk to you. I don't know much about the Tenderloin, but it has pretty good restaurants from what I hear, although it can get dangerous there, especially at night. I've heard in recent years, the TL is getting better though, but still, careful there. I've also heard sketchy things about the Western Addition as well.

Golden Gate Park is a nice place to hang out, go running, play games, etc. I've noticed a trend of increasing crime (not like every night or anything, and probably not even every week, but more than in the past) there especially at night. Recently there was a stabbing and a dog attack there. Lots of hobos live in the bushes. Just east of Golden Gate Park is an area called the Panhandle. LOTS of hobos and homeless people asking for spare change there. Most won't hurt you or anything, but apparently there are lots of drug addicts there. Be careful who you give money to because other hobos might see and then start asking you for money.

On a side note, the Castro District is the "gayest" part of the city. The more to the west you go, generally, it gets more and more residential. The western parts of the cities are nice and generally quiet (the Sunset). The Haight has nice places for shopping, and it gets kind of crowded there. There's also Amoeba Music I can't tell you much about the northern neighborhoods like the Richmond or the Marina though, so sorry lol.

I know I mostly mentioned the bad areas of SF, but it's a great city. It's a big melting pot, and it's nice to have been able to be exposed to so many cultures and ideas. It's very liberal as well. I think I read that it's one of the, if not the, most liberal areas in the United States. I'm going to miss SF a lot when I move down to LA for college in a couple of months.

Here's a map of some SF neighborhoods so you can understand what I wrote above

I hope you enjoy the city!
