Are you set on buying a new guitar? Maybe some upgrades for your current roster?

I dunno, I've heard nothing but good things about those Epiphone ES-335s, and played one at GC the other day, very nice sounding for the price. It would complement your current collection nicely.

Yeah I was thinking of getting a set of custom shop 69 pickups for the strat, but I dont play it as much anymore. Iv fallen in love with the LP studio.

AT the moment im looking at an SG special, Gretsch 5120, and maybe an Epiphone casino.

Also does anyone know how GC's financing works? Last time they wanted a credit card to apply for theirs. I have one now, but the limit is $500, so will that mean theirs is going to be a $500 limit or is it not even a card? Also im attempting to build credit so thats why I ask. I guess I could just pay in cash, but id rather do it this way.

if you really want more versatility, you should get an acoustic.... just sayin

but if you want another electric i would say go for a Jazzmaster. Your Gretch is already one of the best semihollows imo. Jazzys have a really distinct tone that is kinda trippy and really sought after in Indie rock.To keep it in your price range you will have to build it yourself from parts but that's what i did. You can get a $1000 guitar for around half that price if you build it yourself plus you get to choose the specs.

Maybe you shouldnt listen to me , I get some sort of sick satisfaction out of building and refinishing guitars.

thinline telecaster!!!!!! something in a sunburst,(anything but natural finish or butterscotch) I just checked the price, they are all $700 or over......... you know, if you can't even buy a freakin' fender on your budget, maybe you should just save for longer. Its not like you don't have a guitar to play on. Otherwise the epi dot is fun to play

The Gretsch is a solid body(might be a knock off). I dont know when or where it was made, but it feels like its real or maybe the most amazing knock off iv ever played. My acoustic sounds like a Taylor(waits for the shit storm) with the right strings on it, has great action and sounds great when I use it as an electric. The Jazzmaster is a bit out of my range, I could spring for it, but im just not a fan of the design. A mustang would be cool though.

SG is another option as well. Epiphone Casino's also have a good reputation. Just depends what you're lookin for, what kind of sound/genres do you want to get out of your next guitar?

I play classic rock, but recently iv been getting into The White Stripes. I think what I have is a big enough range. Im really leaning toward the Gretsch 5120. Iv always wanted one and I love the Bigsby. But I know I can get a bigsby setup on my LP if I want to, but I dont know if I want to....im a mess and im horrible at making choices.

Im also wondering about the neck on the special. I had an Epiphone g1275 and loved the neck that was on the 6 string. It was big and different then every other neck iv played on. I kinda liked it.

What don't you like about a MIM Fender?

And I'm fairly certain a faded SG just comes with a Gig Bag. I could be wrong though.

I own a MIM Strat(and love it), its just a thing with me. If im paying that much for something it should be American. Iv gotten to a point where if im going to pay X amount for a fender it better be an American one. Who knows...im going to apply for a CC there so if I get a bigger limit I may spend more.

I like the MIM Teles a lot better than the MIM Strats.

I love both, but I wont settle(if buying new) for anything less then a '52 tele reissue in butterscotch(not saying it wouldn't be great to own a mim tele, but you can get those used in great condition for $300). I'm extremely picky about my guitars.

Quote by obeythepenguin
I have only good things to say about the G5120. It's the only electric I have right now, or need. And it could probably out-acoustic my one acoustic, for that matter.

But no point spending money just for the sake of spending; my advice is to go out, look around, play everything, and only buy if you find something that feels right from the moment you pick it up. Much as I like my guitars, two is already too many -- better get the most out of a few instruments than a little from a bunch.

Its not like im so rich im just spending to spend. I just have a bug in me to buy a guitar and id like to build credit so I figure....new guitar!
As far as something that feels right. '52 tele reissue is the one guitar I played and was blown away by. Setup im pretty sure it would be the greatest guitar in the world(in my mind).

How good are these though, especially compared to the more expensive SGs?

Yes, but only in a way indistinguishable from random luck or the result of your own efforts.

Get a nice acoustic! Always good to have one in your arsenal in case you want to do some "unplugged" stuff.

If you want a nice Epi Casino... http://cgi.ebay.com/2008-Epiphone-Elitist-1965-Casino-/220637542058?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar&hash=item335f05b6aa That is only a little over your price range, but considering it retails for $1500, that is a pretty good price.

Sorry, I forget that there are 2 different versions of that Gretsch guitar. It came in both Solid and Hollow bodies. My bad.
Jazzmasters look kool in my opinion but I see your argument, they are defiantly not for everyone.
I do also love the Mustang but it is a shorter scale guitar, I dont know if that would bug you or not. you can get some sick sounds out of it though

Well i've now owned an SG Standard for about 2 months, after being in possession of a Faded special a long way back. And too be honest I would say they are very different, but not exactly in quality; moreso in style or preferation. I felt like the Faded had a much thicker and rounder neck, very similar to a Les Paul Studio. The fadeds neck I would say is U shaped whereas the Standard is more of a thinner C shape, almost fender or ibanezish. The bridge pickup on the standard has more output than the one in the special, but they still both produce a pretty similar sound.

I'd say even compared to the standard the faded is still a very good guitar. Does the standard justify the $600 price difference? It's pretty debateable, but probably not. If Pearl inlays and binding are what you after go for the standard, if you don't need that the Special could be the affordable guitar for you. I see them used for around $400 these days.

The main reason I wanted to upgrade to the Standard is 1.I wanted the 498 bridge pickup since I play mostly high gain stuff. And 2.because someone traded it to me straight up for a Les Paul Studio. People tell me that the dude is an idiot to do that, but brand new the higher end studio's actually go for like $70 more than the sg standard.
