So when strumming down and up on power chords you have to mute the unused strings.

I guess? Ideally you wouldn't strum a power chord, but rather anchor your palm to the bridge and hit only the strings required. But I guess if you were after that open, thrashy sound, then yes, you would have the use the other fingers on your left hand to mute the strings you don't want to sound.

Can't you just strum the R and 5th notes.. it should only be 2 or 3 strings (most of the time on top/below one another).
You want clarity when playing power chords (especially with a lot of gain) and playing 4 or 3 muted unused strings will take some clarity away..
