For those who've already listened to it you'll remember the 'virtual haircut'. Holophonic sound is where they get 2 mics, put them into a dummy head where the ears would be and then when anything is recorded the slight difference in arrival time between one mic and the other creates the feeling of you being in a room. This is the same method our ears use to tell distance and depth and thus it is very effective and realistic.

The other thing is, to experience holophonic sound then you need to use headphones or it dosn't work due to what i said above.

Anyway, i made this thread as i enjoy listening to them and others will too so i'll post some examples up here and hopefully if other people know of any links they can tell us all too.

The 'virtual haircut'

Some 'axe' hair product thing.

'Jeffs top 5 favourite things', a really realistic one!

Various holophonic sound clips

Headphones need to be on for all :] , anyone know of any other good links to this stuff?

No. Stereo is just use of panning of sound. This is actually 3d since it's relying on the arrival time difference just like your ears really work.

And honestly, what are the odds of another thread about the same damn thing happening when i make one :|

Wasn't there a Smashing Pumpkins album recorded like this? Or was that REM?

Anyone remember what it was called?

I think I remember reading that R.E.M.'s Reckoning was recorded in this fashion.

I read about it in a Producing book. It's not really that new. But still cool.

Ok after hearing the Axe ones, I honestly think they should make porn like that. Every time I heard one those woman's voices close to my ears, I got these tingly sensations on my neck

Breaking the Law by Pansy Division uses this well. I feel like there really is a cop pulling up next to me while I'm sodomizing some random guy in a rest area.

I heard about it a while back. I was disappointed though when I did. Not in the technology, but because it was in a piece on NPR about holophonic things like this possibly getting you high by doing something to your brain that would make it fire on the same functions as when you were doing crack or ecstacy or something, and I thought NPR were above shit like that.

Holophonic recording + 3D computer monitor = Best porn ever (presuming it was he tits or something coming at my face, not the dick.)

'Jeff's favorite things' was so great, and at one point there's a knocking off to the right, and I could swear it was my dad knocking on my door. And I rewatched it and I still instinctively turned to see who was knocking

How would you do this for a song then? record a left and right track at the same time, but with mics at varying distances or something?

They're called Binaural recordings, and you need to listen through headphones to make it work, each ear needs to be isolated. Sennheiser make dummy heads with mics inside the ear canals for this sort of recording.

No, that would just give you phase problems. You need the right spacing for it to work properly, hence why they use dummy heads. For a song, you'd probably sit the dummy head in a room and have each instrument positioned differently around the head (obviously not at the same time though) and record them separately like that.
