What are some bands you should like but just can't get into?

Me? I wish I could get into Sonic Youth, I can appreciate their talent, their image and their genre really should suit me, yet I just cannot get into them. I feel the same way about the Rolling Stones and Faith No More. For some reason I don't even want to give Faith No More a chance, because I am such a big Chili Peppers fan. This sounds stupid, I know it does, and is very unlike me not to be open minded, I guess it is just a freak occurrence.

So what are yours?

To clarify, what are some bands that tick all of your musical boxes yet you just don't enjoy?

Anything metal.I get metal,I admire some of the players technical skills,I like the energy but I can't stand listening to it,dunno why.I know it's a genre, not a band but the same thing applies.

Your everything thats wrong with this forum.. Why on earth would anyone dislike something but wish they didnt? I personally don't find modern society all that appealing but i dont go around wishing i did. Christ. And also "this thread doesn't apply to you nonsense" give me a break; so hang yourself and rid this forum of your ignorance.

The Horrors.

I've really tried. And I LOVE their image. (Which is a horrible reason to like a band) But I just don't enjoy their music.

I feel the same, although alot of the time i either like a band or i don't.

To be honest though, some off the offshoots from the desert sessions/queens of the stone age family (Brant Bjork, Unida, etc) are bands i should like, but something always ruins it for me, or rather, i feel it lacks a certain aspect that could make it great.

Dream Theater

I hate the vocals but the music is amazing. Fortunately there's Liquid Tension Experiment.

Dream Theater, I only like one of their songs but I know that I should listen because they would suit me

I feel like I should like D.T for some reason.

Holy shit, so does half this thread
RIP Tom Searle.

Probably Guns 'n' Roses for me, I really like their music, but then I hear Axle's whiney voice all over it and it really puts me off, to the point that I will instantly turn them off if they come on the radio or TV.

Similarly, I bet we all have the odd tune that we secretly like.... but wish we didn't.

You can choose what to like. It isn't wether you like it or not--it's rather wether you want to like it. If you really want to, just give it time, and it'll sort itself out.

Too true, SlackerBabbath, also I bet there are a lot of bands out there that people would love if the singer's voice were different too. I haven't listened to a lot but I feel this way about Primus at times.

Personally i like Mr Bungle, but i can totally see how some people might not get their head around it, they make some really crazy music and some of it can sound like a nonsensical mess, it depends what album you listen to though, i think Disco Volante features some of their most experimental and kind of ambient stuff, while the self titled album is probably about as traditional as they get.

Wow, enjoy your ban, perhaps that'll give you some time to chill out.

I like a band or I dislike a band, pretty simple. But there was one time when I really wanted to get into Scar Symmetry(I had heard so much good about them), but I just couldn't for the life of me listen to any of their crap (that's what I thought of it back then) so I just listened to all of their albums and now I at least don't dislike them any more.

i mean. i listen to an assload of Ween, Butthole Surfers, They Might Be Giants, Captain Beefheart, Frank Black, Tool, etc. It seems like if you combined all of those together you would get Mr Bungle. But I just don't like Mr Bungle.

Too true, SlackerBabbath,

Yeah, I'm essentially a rocker with early punk influences, (although I actualy listen to all sorts of different stuff) but I just love Lou Bega's 'Mambo No. 5' because it's just so damn catchy, and when I sing along to it, all my buddies look at me like I've completely lost the plot.

I don't mind his voice, I think it suits the music they make, but I see your point.

Saying that, Geddy Lee's voice in 'Rush' used to bug the life out of me, probably because it reminded me too much of Jon Anderson from 'Yes', but I've grown accustomed to it now.

My girlfriend loves Taking Back Sunday and country music. I despise the music she listens to. I wish I liked it so I could relate to her more. It's not hard to understand, champ.

But my God, it is so awful..

I always felt like I should have been a fan of Alice in Chains and Nine Inch Nails, but there's something about them that I don't like that I can't quite put my finger on.

EDIT: I also have trouble getting into Grizzly Bear, although I love a whole lot of stuff that sounds like them.

Jane's Addiction. I seem to specialise in squeaky-voiced bands, but for some reason cant get into them. But I love Perry's solo work. And the Smiths, but no one really likes them anyway.
...In my opinion.

Getting into a band is about hitting the right first impressions, try ask fans of the band what they would recommend one that wants to get into them.

I have failed to get into Gamma Ray three or four times, but now I am a big fan of them.

I second Steve Vai. (or third, or whatever). He has amazing talent/skill, an awesome signature guitar and he's influenced by joe satriani (who I love) but I just can't get into his music. The only song I really like is Building the Church, out of like 5 CDs I have of his. :p

Kind of similar deal with Paul Gilbert. Infinite amount of respect for the guys playing ability, but I can't seem to connect with or really enjoy anything he's written. And yet I do like Buckethead, even though some of his riffs seem very reminiscent of Paul's, I just prefer the way Buckethead phrases them and everything.

I think there's a youtube video that compares Gilbert's delay lick to big sur moon and you can hear the similarities, but I love big sur moon and I think Paul's delay lick is just kind of weird.

People always want to whine about a band that they dislike existing, sometimes it's sad to see youtube haters finding videos and flaming away, one can just listen to what one likes and leave the music he/she dislikes alone.
