Binge culture drinking to me has always seemed a term coined for the kind of drinking culuture which has been around in Britain for centuries. If I go down my local pub I see people getting equally as drunk as when I go into town clubbing till the early hours of the morning. Drinking seems to be the one thing us brits exist on for recreation, generally socialising and yes for a lot of us... finding love.

Even most middle-aged people I know seem to spend most nights getting rat-arsed on a bottle of echo-falls finest, yet whenever I look on the T.V. there never seems to be a good word to say for it.

See this for example:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1296652/Ministers-pledge-scrap-Labours-failed-licensing-laws.html

24-hour drinking is probably one of the only triumphs of the Labour government in that it allowed us all to do what the majority of the populous enjoys doing even more of the time. Yet now they are getting rid of it, my question to the pit is, who exactly do you think are these people against binge drinking? and why does it seem to be a term applied only to the young; when excess-drinking is also prevelant in those in there 30s, 40s, 50s and even older.

I think it's incredibly sad that people need to get hammered for fun.

EDIT: Got no problem with drinking, but whats fun about getting legless?

Obviously, but there must be some people who read the daily mail and think 'hey I totally agree with this shit, MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE'

What isn't fun about it? It's rare I go out drinking and don't have a great time. People spend all week working hard and then when they get some freetime they enjoy the release that alcohol gives them

I never understood that culture. On a normal day, is it fun to vomit, be really dizzy, lose all coordination and lose all sense of who you are?

I personally wouldn't do it, because it's terrible for you. However I think people should be allowed to do whatever they want with their bodies, and if that's chug alcohol for hours every day then they should be able to do it. What I'm opposed to is when people drink a ton and then get violent. As long as you're only harming your own body, and not others then I think it's completely fine.
Feed your mind.

I don't really understand all the people bashing the act of getting drunk. You're all probably terrible drunks. Yes, I love getting completely FUBAR shitfaced. Has made for some of the most hilarious nights of my life.

But do you need the alcohol? Can you have fun without get hammered?
I'm with BeardedSeth on this one. It's really uncool seeing people passed out in their own vomit during the weekends.

I can understand having a few to get a buzz and loosen up, but literally going out with intent to binge is pathetic. How boring do you have to be to literally only have fun by making yourself temporarily retarded?

Well only you can answer that question, either you enjoy it or you don't. It's subjective.

I drink fairly often, but only a few beers with my mates or if I'm watching a film at the weekend or something. I do enjoy getting totally wasted on occasion though, it's a great laugh. I know people who get hammered every other day, which I think is moronic, but fuck it, it's up to them.

I can understand people not enjoying getting wasted, but if they can't see why people do enjoy it then they probably need to get out more, or hang around with people who don't get into fights and so on every time they get drunk.
#13
I think it's because of all the health problems, drink driving deaths and the way that it increases levels of violence that people have a problem with it
#14
I think people should be allowed to drink like **** if they want. They're adults and know what they're doing to their bodies.

Actually, people shouldn't drink as much as they do. I do understand the release from work pressures.

I used to get shitfaced quite a lot last summer. I'd go clubbing twice a week, house parties and lots of trips to the pub. Fact of the matter is, I just can't afford it anymore. That and the hangovers got worse.

Obvious people can have fun without getting hammered:

Binge Drinking =/= Being an alcoholic

The entire definition of what binge drinking is considered is also fairly unclear, by the standards under the 'units' measurement, exceeding 5 units would be inresponsible, which is roughly equivalent to having a couple of pints or so.

I can understand that you might personally have an issue with doing it yourself, however as I pointed out in my opening post lots of people enjoy it. Would you have a problem with other people getting legless?

I binged alot when I got out of high school, all summer long, I'd work a few oddjobs every now and again to keep the alcohol coming in...

Binge drinking at the right time is harmless, livers shmivers, you get old and you die.

I don't see the point in constant binge drinking. I also consider binge drinking to be the kind of drinking where you are completely off your face, throwing up, barely conscious of where you are and what you're doing. I enjoy getting drunk as much as the next person, but I will never again let myself get to the point of constant throwing up, on the verge of going paraletic.

But at the same time, has the 24 hour licensing law actually made that much of a difference?

People were still getting shitfaced before it was introduced. The pubs around here usually close at 11.30, so thats only half an hour extra they're open for.
Binge drinkers are still going to binge no matter what time the pub closes.

Obviously that kind of drinking is irresponsible, although I think everyone gets into that stage a one time or another (most likely off a bottle of cider when you're or on your stag/hen night).

The problem with binge drinking in England, is your tendency to get into a group and find someones night to ruin.
#29
I do drink on a fairly regular basis, but i can, for the most part, control myself when drunk, i haven't thrown up from alcohol in ages, if i am having a bit session, i usually call it quits when i find it hard to keep balance and start slurring my words alot.

I never start fights though, i used to get agressive from time to time but i think i just control myself better now.

Night of fun for people who drink: Get hammered, climb onto a roof, urianate on themselves, and go home with a person of unknown gender who is equally drunk, wake up in the morning, puke on a eunuch, and not even know the eunuch's name.

My night of fun (straight edge): drink vast quantities of Mtn Dew and hit my friends with flaming wiffle bats, puke just for fun (on a eunuch if i happen to find one), get frisky with a girl and remember her name in the morning.

Now i certainly won't stop you from bingeing, and i am friends with some people who do or have done, but I really like mtn dew and wiffle bats, and memories of the great night i had. But hey feel free to get hammered, climb onto a roof, urianate on yourself, and go home with a person of unknown gender who is equally drunk, wake up in the morning, puke on a eunuch, and not even know the eunuch's name.

Pfft. I'm an adult and thus I should be allowed to look after myself. If I want to drink until the pub shuts, using all of my money I should be allowed. That said, bars and pubs already have a law that they can't sell alcohol to someone they deem too drunk.

It's the same here.

I saw a bartender cut someone off, call a cab for them, and charge the cab to the persons bar tab. It was good stuff

well i was talking completely hammer-smashed face drunk here. But even the wiffle bats? Really? I'm very proud of ya.

Being a small person and not a drinker, I would definitely urinate upon myself if i got seriously intoxicated. Hence why i don't. That and i don't like the smell or taste of alchohol. Makes staying away from the drink real easy.

Not very good at being "straight edge" then are you?

Personally I don't give two shits what the law says, I've only been drinking in an actual pub once or twice and to be honest it's too expensive to do it more often anyway, if other people want to spend way too much money on their drinks and kick up a fuss when people take away their legal right to do that for an extra few hours that's their lookout.

Yes, even when I'm shit-housed wasted.

And we didn't hit eachother with wiffle ball bats, we poured a can of beer into one, chugged it, crushed the can, and had it pitched to us after we spun around 5 times with the bat after chugging. Fun stuff.
