Not assholes.
I am shortly going to become unemployed permanently. Well permanently in the sense that the company I am working for is going to be sold or liquidated.

My employer has just accepted a position working for the FAA. I don't begrudge him this. He is also one of my closest friends. We've both seen the end of the line for the last 18 months or so. He got an out first.

My question is, Would it be wrong of me to ask him to exaggerate my salary? His business has 3 potential buyers. I don't know if any of them are serious but I do know that if any of the three potential buyers make an offer they'll all try to use unemployment as leverage against me to accept a lower wage.

Is it wrong for me to ask my employer to embellish my earnings to place me in a position to either maintain or increase my earning potential?

Serious question. He is a friend first and foremost. I don't want to compromise that relationship.

Would love somebody to give me some perspective I may not have thought of.

I don't particularly find it wrong, and I guess he won't either if he understands your situation.

If you two are close friends and he's aware you're just trying to protect yourself from being screwed over I think that's a pretty reasonable thing to ask of him as long as it doesn't put him at risk.

if he isnt at risk and hes freind he probably would do it but if it jeopardize him in any way and he said no just drop it

His risk is one of the variables I don't fully comprehend

Well I think that you'd need to figure out the potential ramifications and make him aware of them before asking him to assist you.

If you approach him he may feel pressured to help you out just because you two are buddies, so I'd also let him know to be honest with you if he doesn't feel comfortable doing it.

The short answer is that he can't do it and you shouldn't ask. There are more reasons than the fact that it is just plain immoral. When they buy the company they buy all the company's records, so they'll have access to all your previous pay stubs. He could of course go back and change them all, but that would first of all be fraud, and second of all, you'd end up having to pay taxes on your increased "income" at the end of the year.

edit: that was just worded awkwardly, fixed now

Surely you're in a much better position to know what your friend may think about it than we are, so if your asking us you probably already know that you want to ask him about it and you're just looking for us to agree with your position, thus justifying it to yourself. But anyway... as long as it's legal it's probably not going to be an issue, although I suspect it probably is illegal to change the figures so that it looks as if you received a higher salary than you actually recieved.

Personally I probably wouldn't ask about it, bringing up money between friends is never a great idea, I'm guessing it'd be pretty awkward to ask for a raise under normal circumstances, if he refuses to do it you'll end up resenting him for it ( you know you will) so it depends whether that matters to you enough or not.

But as said previously, you are far more aware of the detailed circumstances than an onlooker (especially one gathering infomation from this one topic) could ever know. So it's your call at the end of the day. Maybe you should ask somebody in a better position than us to judge, who is also impartial.

Agreed, it's fairly risky for him.

I will. He was brutally honest with me this morning. Took me back a bit. He knew I was looking for a new job. He told me to. I was just taken aback a bit by the fact that he beat me to it.

Also, I totally thought you were going to announce your retirement in this thread.

That's not an option I've ruled out. There are only about 40 or 50 people in all of the US that do my job at the level I do it at. I know them all. They know I'm looking. Some are pooping their pants.

In that case you're probably receiving a decent enough wage, I'd say prepare yourself to take a wage cut rather than fiddling with figures, you've still got the option of looking for new employment whilst working for the reduced wage.

Anything else is just greed induced fraud.

Perfect, just try to be empathetic of the position that you're putting him in by asking him to do this for you.

That's gotta be an eye opener if you look around and find your friends are so old they're all losing bowel control

Maybe it is time to retire

The catch is I'd have to move. Which means I'd have to sell my house. In Michigan. Which means I have a boat anchor tied around my balls.
I'd rather fiddle with figures.
