I took this from a website ranking the top ten directors of all time.

1. Steven Spielberg (Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park)

2. Alfred Hitchcock (Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo, Shadow of a Doubt)

3. Woody Allen (Annie Hall, Manhatton, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days)

4. Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Departed)

5. Stanley Kubrick (Dr Strangelove, 2001 A Space Oddyssey, Spartacus)

6. Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds)

7. Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong)

8. Joel Coen (No Country for Old Men, A Serious Man, Fargo, The Big Lebowski)

9. Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather Trilogy, Apocalypse Now)

10. John Lounsbery (Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins, Dumbo)

Poll coming.

Out of those I have to say either Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino or Jackson.

Others I think should be in the top ten are James Cameron and Christopher Nolan, although Nolan is relatively young.

What do you guys think?

#11-20, that are not on the poll, were as follows:

11. Clint Eastwood
12. John Ford
13. Michael Curtiz
14. John Carpenter
15. Ridley Scott
16. Christopher Nolan
17. Orson Welles
18. Robert Zemeckis
19. Billy Wilder
20. Howard Hawkes

And I'll write out #21-30 because I just looked and a bunch that people are saying are there.

21. James Cameron
22. Ron Howard
23. George Lucas
24. Michael Mann
25. David Lynch
26. Tim Burton
27. William Wyler
28. Sam Raimi
29. Ang Lee
30. David Fincher

Out of that list, it's a tie between Coen Brothers and Tarantino for me. Scorsese would be third though.
#11
Ridley Scott.
Edit: actually, tied with Tarantino.

Scorsese is my hands down favorite, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and to a lesser extent Mean Streets are amazing films. Woody Allen being a close second, I know about the step daughter thing but an argument has to stand on its own merits. I love New York movies and these two directors really have a way of showcasing New York arcitecture and capture a very raw feeling that I just love.

Akira Kurosawa is by far one of the best directors in film making history.

i'll rank the whole damn list. spacing is indicative of something, how much more i like one group than the next?

10. Spielberg (JP and the first three Indiana Jones are pretty much what redeems him)

9. Jackson (but only because of Heavenly Creatures)
8. Tarantino

7. Coppola

6. Scorsese

5. Lounsbery
4. Hitchcock

3. Allen
2. Kubrick

1. Coen

edit: ok, just saw the whole list. not going to bother with the whole thing. Lynch and Nolan would get bumped up if i did it though.

where's Fritz Lang?

Coens, Kubrick, Scorsese

I've only seen one Woody Allen movie, Annie Hall, and it's fantastically superb. But I can't say that he's one of my favorites just because of one movie.

I like all of Tarantino's movies, even Death Proof, but I find him to be very overrated for the most part.

Also I really like Hitchcock, but I feel weird saying that he's one of my favorites.

I like Spike Jonze too, but he's only made three movies so I don't think he should be in the best of discussion. All three are really good though.

Out of the three directors I picked, I think I'd go with the Coens as my favorite because I like their movies the best. Kubrick's movies are beautiful and Scorsese is Scorsese. But the Coens take influence from those two (and many others) and make some really fun, easy to watch movies. But it's not fun in the way Transformers is "fun." They don't put out quality movies. Some of which will be talked about along with the best movies of all time.

This is bullshit. Where is this great genius on that poll?

You mean he was left out?

What a twist!!!

After seeing Inception, its definitely Christopher Nolan. I'll take Inception Dark Knight and Memento over any 3 movies from any other director. Inception wipes its ass with copies of Avatar.
