I am looking for a new amp and I saw these three on ebay for reasonable prices.

My question is which of these amps would do best for higher gain stuff and more extreme metal such as Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Extreme Prog Metal, and some Black Metal and Modern Thrash?

Bands like: Carcass, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, In Flames, Nevermore, Scar Symmetry, Ishan, Cynic, Atheist, Death, Dark Tranquillity, Strapping Young Lad, Cannibal Corpse, Gojira, At the Gates, and Shadows Fall.

Well my gut says the KTRE but I'd want to sit them all together and crank 'em up one after another before I chose.

Does sound like a lot of fun doesn't it?

Sounds like a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

But unfortunately there is no play within a three or four hour drive that has a Framus Dragon or KTRE head. But I have played the Roadster and it sounded pretty good.

The KTRE would suit your music much better but the Roadster is coming in second place and not by far at all

Roadster is def the hotest rectifier. You might want an OD in front of it to tighten up the gain a little.

As for the other two boutique brands..

if your considering spending $3000+ for the Ktre or the Dragon, then you might as well look at the Road King instead of the Roadster. Then again Im a bit biased, but the Road King is an amzing amp. EDIT: nvm, missed the part about finding them on Ebay

best thing to do would be play them all and pick the one you like best. if you cant, then look up demos on youtube, so you can get some idea of how each sounds.

Then go drive 4 hours and test them. 4 hours really isn't that bad. Hell, make a weekend out of it.

Well the reason I mention the Dragon and KTre is because there are some used ones on ebay for a little more than a grand and I don't want to spend more than $1700 on a head ($2000 at most). And I just threw out four hours as a guess. I haven't found anything but Peaveys, Boogies, Marshalls, VHTs and the occational boutique amps in LA and I really don't want to drive to LV or SF/Sacramento just for amps. Although I might do that when I go see my dad up near Sacramento next week.

if your in la. you go to truetone music

but i'd take a ktre in a heartbeat

For 1700 you could easily get a Roadking from Ebay or Guitar Center used instead of a roadster
I traded in my Real Books for Robbins and Cotran Pathology Textbooks
#14
Well I found a used VHT SIG X on gc so its down to either that or the Roadster. How do these two amps stack up to each other?

Since when does either of those amps cost $3000+??

I'd go for the K-Tre, or try and find a Framus Cobra instead.

i'd take the roadster roadking out of the equation entirely. their great all around versatile gigging amps and pretty much the best recto you can grab but...

well the ktre is already kicking its ass in the hi gain channel and clean channel, fryettes are like the ktre on crack with a much worse clean. and mclaw loves the cobra. that should say something at least.

From what I've heard of the youtube vids, I'm not that impressed with the KTre, just doesn't sound like what I am looking for.

How about ENGLs? I can get the Fireball, but how much do used Invaders, SEs, and Savages go for?

shadows fall uses ktres pretty much now.
i wouldn't go by youtube. i like fryette a bunch more then engl.

Engl Savage/SE.

Seriously though, don't go off the YouTube videos for the K-Tre. They all suck.

I wasn't expecting much when I got one, but after having one for 2 weeks before sending it to Russia, I can honestly say, it's one of my favorite high gain amps ever.

I think I am going to get the KTre but I'd like to know if it's a fixed bias amp or can I have rebiased for 6L6s or modded for KT88s?
#26
no it can't. it doesn't need to be. that amp sounds closer to a 6l6 amp then it does an el34 amp. It can probably run kt88s but if I remember mien correctly I don't remember if 4 of them will fit. Generally most amps that run el34s can run kt88s that are cold biased.

Well that sucks. Still I heard the samples on Rivera.com and they ****ing blew my mind so I'm going to pick one up and just get some used 6L6 amp down the line like a Recto or something and run em both together but yeah I am definately sold on the KTre.
#28
why do you need another 6l6 amp? the difference isn't that much at all. el34s will be tighter for metal anyway.

Well for what you listen to the K Tre would suit you well, but don't expect to get that Gojira sag/bloom tone without either A: a Dual Rec or B: a really loose cab...or both. You will greatly enjoy the Rivera though.

that was the price i saw when i looked it up. I did make a mistake, the Ktre isnt $3000+, but unless im totally wrong, the Framus. is i realise he's looking at used ones though.
