hey pit, i came across this quiz in one of my classes and thought it would be interesting to see how the citizens of the pit would do

its a short quiz that presents you with people smiling and you have to chose whether the smile is genuine or not, the hypothesis is that socially rejected people will be better at detecting fake smiles than accepted people

here's the link:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/smiles/

post your scores here after you're finished

i got 17/20 correct can you beat me?

EDIT: try to do the quiz without scrolling down this page because there are some potential spoilers

I got 17/20 I'm pretty socially accepted. I would've got perfect, but for the first 3 I didn't know you had to play the video, I thought it was just a picture. I should be an interrogator.

I went against my impulses for one, and that turned out to be wrong. Oh well.

I'm highly anti-social as well, so I guess it's like those people that can understand a foreign language but not speak it. I can understand people, I just don't speak People.

The secret is in the eyes. If you can't spot a fake smile it's not that you're antisocial, it's that you have no idea what "genuine" people look like, which would probably be MORE antisocial, if I'm not wrong.

Because two of the videos scared me and I clicked which ever answer was closest.

The eyes were exactly what I was looking at, although there were a few in there who had very genuine smiles but with little of the eye-creasing, so it was tricky.

I got 13 out of 20.

And I'm fairly anti-social. And by fairly I mean pretty antisocial.

It's deeper than the description crap at the bottom. You can just tell when you look in someone's eyes if they're genuine or not. You shouldn't have to think about a smile.

The "conclusions" drawn about antisocial people being better at this seems kind of retarded. This test is all about reading body language. Social people would be far better at this, wouldn't they?

18/20. It's in the cheeks/eyes.

I got the first three wrong and all right after that until the asian woman. I could tell by looking at the eyes so that's probably why I slipped up there.

Could be that increased awareness of the true feelings of those around leads to feeling more insecure. If you're aware that people are fake laughing at what you say, you might feel discouraged from socialising, whereas people who believe the smiles regardless would feel comforted and want to be around people more often.

13/20, I used to be fairly antisocial, but since I've been at college I've become accepted more and therefore have become more accepting.

This one scared the crap out of me, for some reason:

I think it's because her eyes are quite far apart. I don't know, I rushed past this one to get away. One of the ones I got wrong

You're probably on to something there. I really hate when people fake laughing. In my experience, it's more of a girl thing than a guy thing. There's this one girl I know who fake laughs at unfunny jokes and it annoys me so much, and I'm not easily annoyed.

Anyone else find it next to impossible to do what we just did in a real social setting though? It's easy to see when you're being told to look and have time to check and recheck, but in the real world I don't think anyone would do half as well as they actually did. I still don't think the hypothesis could at all apply to real life.

Two of the clips didn't play properly for me though.

I think it's more to do with knowing what to look for rather than how social you are... also, this is very unrealistic compared to a real social situation. Unless they're very awkward and bad at showing the 'correct' body language and facial expressions, you won't be able to tell most likely, unless you're an interrogator or something.

14/20 I too was looking at the eyes, but now I will look at the ends of the eyebrows when someone smiles.
