TLDR - Scroll down for guitar porn.

Hmmmmm well I wanted to buy a new guitar and I knew exactly what sort of specs I wanted, browsing through the forum here to see what had been suggested when people came with similar demands.

After reading this a few billion times

You sound like you want a schecter...

Dude the Schecter is the best guitar...

Schecterz Rul3ZZZZ!!!!111!!

Well I am in the UK and Schecter are avaliable here, but they are pretty damn expensive for what they are. I decided that although they do make decent guitars, I wasnt too happy with the idea of paying out up to £1000 on my new guitar if it was built in Korea and lets face it, there are far better guitars for the money. My Epiphone Explorer is MIK and cost £300 so after finding the Schecter I played, a c1 Hellraiser for sale at £749 I was very disappointed as the overal quality was pretty close to my Explorer and I was surprised that so many people here idolise them.

I had a look at 2nd hand ESPs and Jacksons but I couldnt find anything that felt quite right. I played a few and have owned a couple of Ibbys, LTDs and Jacksons but couldnt find anything that fits my playing style as my taste has developed and changed over the past 8 years.

I then thought as I am after a super strat, why not try a few strats? So I did. I played about a million ( ok about 10 - 12 ) MIMs and MIAs and a few HSS configs. I liked the familiarity of the body shape but the tone wasnt quite what I was after, although the tones were ideal for classic rock and bluesy tuff, the more modern tones I am after, I play metal mainly as well as pretty much everything from Dance to Pop Punk so wanted that dread V word. Versitlity.

After this, I knew that I wanted EMGs as I ove how I can dial in 3/4 different tones through just using the Volume. So I was browsing the Fender website and found this...

Hell yeah baby...

REVIEW

MIA .
Flat White .
Mahogany Body .
Satin Nitrocellulose Lacquer Finish .
Modern "C" Shape - 12" - 14" compound radius.
22 Jumbo Frets .
Fingerboard: Maple .
Neck Material: Maple .
Neck Finish: Satin Urethane Finish .
Scale Length: 25.5".
Controls: Master Volume - 3 way selector.
Hardware Finish: Black .
Pickguard: 3-Ply White .
Locking Tuners .
EMG 81/60 .

I was impressed by the overal feel of this guitar, helped no doubt by the amazing neck on this guitar, it really needs to be played to give a good understanding of how amazing this is. The neck is based on the San Dimas Charvel necks and feels great. The jumbo frets are massive, as the name suggest and really help with playing the serious speedy stuff as well as helping with more bluesy bends.

The EMGs are great and are my favourite combo, the 81 sounds like an EMG and is great for metal and thats pretty much it. The 60 however is possibly the best pickup ever made. it is incredibly versitle and the simple volume control honestll allow me to create Shimmering cleans / crunchy clean / rock / dirty rock / metal leads. All from one setting on my amp. With the right settings this neck pickup allows me to do all the things I wanted and really really adds to what this guitar to do other than maybe an 81 and 85 combo found in most other metal strats.

The fit and finish of this guitar is amazing and for £799 to get a MIA strat with my ideal setup was way to good to pass up. Screw a MIK or MII LTd or Schecter, this is the guitar to get, the frets are perfect ass is the paint and pretty much everything else. It is just a joy to play and I cannot wait to gig it.

Considering the huge variety of metal orientated strats, why people buy anything else is beyond me. Yeah it doesnt have a floyd and 24 frets, but if you dont need those, then hell.

This is the guitar to get.

Hope this helps somebody

Tom

Looks great, but please remove those stickers from the neckplate

Happy NGD
You've read it, you can't un-read it!

A Fender with EMGs? O.o Course I threw Blackouts in my Squier. Still sounded like shit though.

Anyway...Happy NGD!

Edit: It's a Jim Root strat.

Btw, you really should try some Seymour Duncan Blackouts. If you think EMGs sound good, just freaking wait, TS.

I can't really say anything positive or negative about schecter, having never tried one - in fact i only know one person who actually has one. But i do suspect that they are a bit overrated on UG. Hopefully i'll try one sometime soon now i'm near a shop which actually sells them.

I know it's not just fender, but it is a fender jim root strat we're talking about.

besides, girls can't read so it doesn't matter what it says on the headstock I'm joking, of course

I have a schecter c1 elite its a good guitar and well worth the £300 used i paid for it AGES ago but i wouldnt dream of buying a new schecter at the prices they're at you can get so much better. I also played a c1 exotic star a while back and the neck felt HORRIBLE compared to my elite.
Nice Fender BTW

I don't think anyone who is asking for clips in this thread is really interested in schecter at all. I'm not. I wanna hear it because as i said on the first page, i'm looking for a "non-metaller's metal axe"

I never realized how different comparitive prices were in the UK as compared to in the States.....this probably explains a lot of the Schecter Hellraiser recs....

From looking at a couple of UK sites, I see that the Hellraisers and the Jim Root Strat are roughly the same price. In the USA the Jim Root Strat sells for $1500 whereas the Hellraisers are $8-900 (can almost always find a least one model on closeout somewhere for under $500). I bet most of us over here in the states never realized that Schecters and USA Fenders were playing in the same price range across the pond.

Every guitar I own is a Schecter. Believe it or not, one of the cheapest ones I own is the best feeling and best sounding. My Damien Solo is amazing....to me.

Whatever floats your boat though, they're not for everyone.

I've not paid over $600 for any one of mine, and every one has been well worth every penny.
