Hi, folks. It was my birthday recently, so I bought myself a nice piece of mahogany.

Here are the specs:

Body shape: ESP RS,
Headstock shape: Pointed ESP,
Scale: 25.5",
Number of frets: 24 jumbo,
Body wood: African mahogany,
Neck wood: Maple-purpleheart-maple,
Fingerboard: Plain or birdseye maple (I haven't decided yet),
Fingerboard binding: Black single-ply,
Headstock binding: Black-white-black 3-ply,
Body binding: Black-white-black 3-ply,
Pickups: Irongear Hammerhead and Rolling mill (with vinyl on plastic covers) perhaps hard-mounted,
Electronics: Volume, tone, 3-way,
Hardware: Black,
Bridge: Tune-O-Matic and string-through body, with a V-shaped tailpiece,
Finish: White front with black graphic vinyl (design undecided) that will continue onto the pickup covers, black stained rear.

Body template:

Neck template:

Neck pocket template:

African mahogany:

Body blank and template:

I'm going to cut the blank into two pieces of 145x533mm and one piece of 142x533mm. That will allow me to use my bench planer to prep them, then I'll join them to make a blank of the right size/configuration to cut the star out of.

As much as i've never liked extreme shapes... These guitars are AMAZING. I want a firewind sig, but they're SO expensive.

Initial routing of the body shape and pickup cavities:

I had a bit of tear-out here and there, but I anticipated that and made the template slightly larger than I needed it. Also, I destroyed the bearing on one cutter and snapped the shank of another, so I'll be holding on to continue until I replace those.

looks awesome. i'm always envious when i see people actually "building" their guitar. my experience is really only putting the parts together

Well, I don't have a band saw or table saw. I find that I can do everything I'd use those for with a jigsaw, circular saw, and a router.

Finish goes like this:

White vinyl with a graphic on the front - I haven't finished the design yet,
Black stain on the back and sides,
LOTS and LOTS of clear coat.

Can't wait to see how its gna turn out :P

I'm about to actually start my build next week or so wen skool starts so I could finally go into a workshop!

I just spent 15mins drawing out the wings for my guitar (KV build) and saw ur thread. Should have sawed off the wood then rearrange it like urs... i ended up tilting the wings which will not look good (as im doing a stain finish, most likely).

this is going to look sick. are you doing a custom headstock decal?

It's kind of light looking IMO for a white guitar, I think the contrast of a darker fingerboard would look better. Yet also, IMO, you cannot go wrong with Wenge, but you also have your opinions, so do what looks best to you.

EDIT: also, how are you doing the decals? Vinyl? I had a signmaker put vinyl lettering on a box I made, and even though I put a ton of clear on it, the top coat wasn't flat and had raised bits where the letters were under them. I know that I probably could have fixed it, and made it flat, but I didn't actually try, and it still looked fine.

I'm definitely liking the looks of this so far. Can't wait to see it all finished up.

That works with a light fingerboard.

The vinyl will be printed on adhesive white backing, so the finish will be consistent... and the headstock decal will be much the same. Either that, or I'll spray the top white then use a transparent vinyl with the black graphic on that's the size of the body.... then clear coat over that.

I think a dark fretboard will look better. Metal star is metal though.

What is tulip wood? Surely you don't mean tulip poplar . . .
#29
Mint tulipwood / poplar probably isnt a good idea for a fretboard...

That is very good. I really want to build my own guitar body, but I'm afraid I would buy the wood and then screw it up. I would buy the neck, because I would screw it up.
