2009 - Major breakthrough in cancer research | Scientists engineer new plastics without use of fossil fuels | Mouse genome is fully sequenced | Water is discovered on the Moon | Mercury is 98% mapped | A shift towards portable (and ultra-portable) PCs | Mind control headsets available for gamers | The tallest man-made structure in history is completed | Kepler searches for Earth-like planets | 3D scanning enters the consumer market | Africa's population tops one billion

Well...this thing can't actually predict what happened last year.

Edit: Oops double post, sorry.

I actually have a book on robotics from the 70's or 80's. Its filled with Jetsons-esque pridictions about how people were going to be living on the moon by the 2000's and how robots will be doing everything for us. It's quite lulzy.

While reading through the 2010 part:

In a giant leap for biotechnology, a team of scientists led by DNA pioneer Dr Craig Venter have successfully created the first artificial lifeform. Mycoplasma laboratorium is an entirely new species of bacterium, with a man-made set of genetic code - originating on a computer - and placed on a synthetic chromosome inside an empty cell. Using its new "software", the cell can generate proteins and produce new cells.

Wait, what? This really happend? Why have I not heard about this?

I just got done reading it. I skipped to the 22nd century, but at the end, it says that the sun is going to become a red giant and then a red dwarf. Obviously. But what does this mean for the hyper advanced civilization we've (theoretically) built? Won't people who have been alive for millions of years go berserk when they have to face death?

And yes, I know this is all a very far fetched theory, and almost none of it is likely to happen, but it's fun to speculate.

EDIT: I'm stupid, I forgot to include that the degenerate era of the universe was what I was referring to. >.<

Futurama anybody?

For some reason that is creepy as hell, especially the part about androids being indistinguishable from humans, Im kinda glad I'll be dead by then.

ADD ON: Also, another part I don't like is how they're saying humans will eventually become almost completely immersed in the internet, absorbed in a fake digital reality. Again, making me glad Im living in an age where we still rely on real human interactions.
I pride myself on my humility.

You won't have to wait a couple hundred years. The predictions from the 60's and 70's about the year 2000 are pretty funny to look back on today. I was told I'd have a jet-pack, a flying car and personal robots by now.

The Asimov story still deals with that in an interesting way. In any case, it's not something we'll have to deal with. The site also reminded me of this, which actually predicted a few things fairly accurately.

I noticed an inconsistency, where it says things about "the descendants of humanity."
Won't human evolution be completely negated by technology by that point? Even completely biological humans are going to live somewhere settled, and everywhere that is settled will theoretically have ridiculous amounts of technology. Evolution, unless I am somehow mistaken is based on having to adapt to your environment, so only the strong members of a race survive. Won't your environment adapting to you completely destroy that notion? Though if what the article says is true, (which it isn't) humans will be able to genetically alter themselves to be 12 feet tall, have super strength, etc.

Again, theory, speculation.

It could be argued that the natural evolution of humans has already been thwarted by modern medicine, yes. For natural selection to occur the weak have to die before they breed. We keep people alive long enough to do that when they would have died as infants if we were in the wild, so to speak. We even impregnate women that can't bare children naturally and bring them to full term. Keep thinking and you'll think of other ways we perpetuate faulty and inferior genes too.
Don't get me wrong I don't agree with eugenics and am not saying this is a bad thing, I'm not saying it's a good thing for that matter either, it's just a thing.

Edit: @ Quailman. That's no good. I want my Fembot to cook and clean too. All those marvelous things that women won't do anymore. Yeah, I thought it was strange the way it doesn't mention what happens to the universe's immortal 'lifeforms' at the end of the universe. The way they make them out to be godlike high-tech space ghosts, I'm surprised they don't have them migrating to other universes or something.

The International Space Elevator is operational

Rising from the Pacific Rim, this mega-structure is thousands of miles high. Decades in the making, it has been built entirely from carbon nanotubes. These are hundreds of times stronger than ordinary steel and capable of withstanding the enormous tensile forces involved. The elevator is controlled largely by AI, which monitors any stresses or unusual conditions.

One major obstacle to the project's completion - aside from the initial outlay - was the need for international agreements on safety, security and insurance in the event of an accident. Although the technology was available as far back as 2040, these issues (and others) delayed construction by many years.

A major space boom is now finally underway, as passengers can be delivered to orbit at vastly reduced costs, compared with traditional rocket launches.*

did this remind anyone of the south park episode where the kids try to build a ladder to heaven out of household crap. and the Japs decide to race them and build this uber hi tech lift
