is there a must-have on a pedalboard?

and is there any kind of tone helper? signal response

If you're gigging, a tuner is always useful.

Other than that, it depends on what kind of sounds you want (which will depend mostly on the amp).

get the amp first and go from there...
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

In order of importance:

Tuner (you might also want an EQ pedal)

Overdrive/distortion (might want two depending on what you play)

Noise gate/suppressor (could be lower if you don't use that much gain)

Delay/Reverb

modulation (chorus, phaser) you might also want a wah pedal.

compressor (higher up if you play country)

pretty sure thats it. check out proguitarshop on youtube for demos of pedals that you want.

A tuner, compressor, an eq, and usually at least a delay as far as actual effects go.
I have a huge fear if rays.

^^^ Ditto.

But to answer your question, get a good quality power supply, an overdrive, and a delay.
Tele - EP Booster - DLS - Big Muff - Ekko 616 - Rocker 30/AC15

Might not need one at all if you have a channel switcher and are fine with the amp's clean and OD channels.

Delay/Reverb

modulation (chorus, phaser)

compressor (higher up if you play country)

You may not need one, even with the following.

Most important is a power supply.
I love all 5 (sold a couple) of my Carvin X-100b's.

+1... Musts on a pedalboard depend on the amp. For example, I'd say reverb and OD are musts on a pedalboard, but if you're amp has reverb and a good OD channel then I'd be wrong.

the only "must" imo is a tuner. depending on amp the rest is all speculative.

^What if his amp has a tuner? I know of some TOP-NOTCH amps that come with built in tuners.

What effects did you use with your zoom?
No point us telling you to get a overdrive pedal if you never use it for example.
We also need more information, what styles do you play, and what amp will you get?
Other than that, i agree that tuner and power supply are a must on most pedalboards, but other than that we need more information.

really he needs an amp first.

If you don't know, you don't need it.
Just get a new amp, then figure out if you're missing anything, which you may not be.

And the 'tone helper' you're looking for is called practice.

As far as the tone helper goes, he really just needs a new amp.

I'm going to say either get a Vox with a couple distortion pedals, or a Jet City with a boost.
I have a huge fear if rays.

Sorry, it's just that when I see this:
and is there any kind of tone helper? signal response

I'm not really sure what to think, since it's barely a coherent thought, so I just assume that you're 14 and don't know what's up. A lot of kids come on here having played for a year and just want a pedal to make them sound br00tal instead of learning how to play the instrument.

My advice stands: get a new amp, and don't spend any money on pedals until you notice something's missing.

An OD is one of the only must haves, IMO. it has so many uses. use it on the celan channel either as a clean boost or for a slightly dirty sound, or use it on the dirt channel for extra gain and leads. even if you don't use it for you sound at all, it can still be used as a buffer to clear up your signal over long stretches of cable. there really is no reason not to have a good OD.
