Hello all,

I wanted a few people to help me weigh in on this question; what is better for overall musical development, focusing on learning other people's music thoroughly in an attempt to assimilate their style, or practicing technical exercises and new material evenly?

It was my original thought that by learning music thoroughly and perfectly, you'd build different techniques, vocabulary, and musicality in the direction you want to go with your own music.

Thoughts on this?

Personally I think you're better off learning songs and if you can't find a song that works on what you want write a small etude focusing on exactly what you need to work on. That being said... work on improvising as well, from both points of view; lead and rhythm.
