hey, stupid question here,
i wanted to know how to do a pick scrape..
you know that noise in songs when you hear this descending scratching?, like..how can i explain..tom delinge does it at the beginning of aliens exist, right before the riff starts, or otherwise in guns n' roses knocking on heavens door, after the solo and that vocal bit with the backing voices ecc, before he starts the same riff he does it..sorry i rambled too much, but i hope you get the picture..i think it's called a pick scrape.

anyway i've tried scratching the pick down the neck..it's not the same sound.
help??

hold your pick perpendiculer to the strings with the long edge of your pick against the wound strings and scrape down them. you dont need to press hard, you dont really want to be pushing againtst the fret board

Hysteria - Muse has an ascending pick scrape that sounds pretty eerie and it's pretty cool. Check it out, it in the intro.

But in order to do a pick scrape all you really do is what CreepingDeath13 said, you get a distorted/overdriven kind of sound, it really doesn't have to be a heavy tone, and you use the edge of pick and run it down perpendicular to the strings.

Heres a video demonstrating it.

scrape the edge of the pick up or down the strings whilst sliding your fretting hand in the opposite direction. i.e so your hands either meet or move away from each other.
