Sorry for the stupid question, but I was just wondering why jacks are 1/4", why not just use the smaller sized 3.5mm (don't know the imperial) and save materials and costs?

Are they used just because they're tougher or do they help signal quality?
I doubt its the latter but I was just wondering and couldn't find any reason on teh interwebz

So, can someone please enlighten me?

(Oh and I did search and look through the stickies but to no avail)

1/4" was what was around in the early days. No one is going to change because it'll create compatibility issues.

I believe the answer about "that's all they used to have" is correct, but also in my opinion the 1/4" cables are stronger than the 1/8" ones. Seems like they stay in the jack better, and it's just a much larger physical area so there's less chance of bending or breaking the plug.

Pssshhh, I wish they were XLR's, 1/4" jacks don't last long enough

You could always mod your gear to use XLRs. That'd be pretty cool actually.

xlrs have too many unncessary pins. nuetrik locking yay.
plus they are used for balance line levels. it's too much tech for what guitars need.
TRS is fine.
Plus do you want xlr jacks on all of your pedals? them things are big.
1/8 connectors are cool but they are fragile as hell.

The main benefit of using XLR's is reduced noise, but with a guitar it wouldn't make any difference. 1/4" jacks last just fine for me anyway.
