I prefer the British system but obviously being a science student you have to use the modern standards for these things.

I'd like to sincerely apologize for the joke I'm about to make.

Maybe my sagan unit, if you catch my drift.

While speaking, writing or reading in English, I use the short scale. In Norwegian, the long scale.

The British million is rarely used compared to the American version, therefore generally I consider it 1,000,000,000.

1 billion ones.

Well in Denmark it's:

Million: 1,000,000
"Milliard": 1,000,000,000
Billion: 1,000,000,000,000

I wasn't even aware that it meant anything other than 1000 million.

I'm German, so it's option 2 for me. But I never knew you could choose in English speaking countries.

You can't really. In the last 50 years the UK switched to the short scale, so officially, a billion is a thousand million. You still get a fair amount of people clinging to the old system just because it's "British" (even though it's not, particularly).
#15
In Danish, we still use long scale and say million, milliard, billion, billiard etc. So I guess I use both :p

Yeah, same thing in Finnish:

Million: 1,000,000
"Miljardi": 1,000,000,000
Billion: 1,000,000,000,000

Billion: 1,000,000,000,000

In norway too, but it's the same as the Danish one for 10^9.

In english it is
million (10^6)
billion (10^9)
trillion
...

In norwegian we have
million (10^6)
milliard (10^9)
billion
billiard
...

We regular mortal people does not really have to care about money sums using those numbers anyways.

Saying a billion is a thousand million is like saying a kilometer is 150 metres.

In the english language it is a thousand millions, but in some langauges it is a million millions.

No one here (America) ever uses the 10^12 one as billion, that would be trillion for us.

For all things physics and engineering related, it's 10^9, at least in the UK, so I'm used to that.

It's properly 1,000,000,000,000, but it's easier to assume it's 1,000,000,000 due to the amount that version is used.

Damned Americanisms.

But, it would be impractical to use as everyone else uses the other, so I go with that.

True, but often when addressing the general public, it helps to describe things in billions of whatevers, just to add some good old awe.

This debate has always made me wonder, when people say there are over 6 billion people on the planet, do they mean 6 million million or 6 thousand million?

Anyone?

I remember getting told in school that it is a million million and that 1,000,000,000 was "American" (I can't remember what teacher it was; possibly my chemistry teacher and he did occasional go off on a tangent about the Americans), but being a science and math student, I've gotten used to using 1 thousand million.
