It littlephil says something, consider it to be the absolute truth.
Marshall amplifiers are the truest purveyors of rock and roll known to man.

"And give a man an amplifier and a synthesizer, and he doesn't become whoever, you know. He doesn't become us."

Holy crap, check this out!

What you need is an explosive device that will fit in the socket - then blow the whole thing to pieces. The best sound you'll ever get out of an AVT.

The 'new amp' tube would work best.

Let's be honest - it could be worse.

Yeah... I have to agree with these guys. Though I would still put something like a JJ in it.

Just throw a GT in there and watch it light up.

Seriously people, he is just looking for advice. No need to criticize his amp that he or someone else had to work to pay for. Though I wouldn't completely disagree with you s;;

Ignore everyone else.

What change do you want to make to the sound?

Darker? Brighter? Less gain? More gain?

Answer these, then read all the posts above, then change the tube, see if you like the change and then buy a new amp.

Personally I upgraded from an AVT to a 26 year old Peavey Bandit, best decision ever.

So you would still agree that the 'new amp' tube is ultimately the most beneficial?

And when one considers that old Bandits sound like somebody spent all day throwing wet mud at the speaker that says a LOT.
Sorry TS but even if you put a $100 Mullard in there it will sound bad. AVT's are tinny and harsh so I guess if any valve will smooth it out and give it some depth it would be a JJ. However, I'm not convinced that the valve in an AVT does very much at all tbh.
