The harmonic minor scale is the same as the natural minor scale, except with a major (not augmented) seventh...

natural minor: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
harmonic minor: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7

Minor != Aeolian. While it may appear that all the cool kids use them interchangeably, there is a big difference.

Minor involves the harmonic and melodic conventions that alter the scale. Without those conventions, or any that suggests them, something can rightfully be called Aeolian. Even in terms of modern modality, it's easier to call it minor.
