Ive already got a guitar half stack but as i now also play bass i was wondering if i could play the bass through the cab if i changed the head

Actually you'd need the opposite. A guitar head can play bass, a guitar speaker cannot.

Yes, you could run the bass through the Mofo, as long as you're running it with a bass cab. Over time the vibrations from the bass would damage a guitar speaker's cone and voice coil, but if you use a bass cab you should have no problems.

Robert Trujillo of Metallica uses (or used to use) Triple Rectos, so...

if i used the guitar cab just once whilst waiting for the bass cab to come, but playing quite loud, would this damage it?

I wouldn't do it. It probably wouldn't do damage if you kept the volume pretty low, and only used it briefly... But it could.
