Sometimes when I'm learning a solo, after a while, the fingers I'm fretting with start to hurt a little. Is there something wrong with my technique? or should I not play as long?

i doubt you are doing a warm up, and yes if it hurts stop and continue later, your playing posture could also have something to do with it.

If you are new to playing it will hurt to fret after a while, over time the skin on your fingers will thicken and It won't hurt.

What kind of pain is it exactly and where is it in your hand precisely? Also if you could post a picture or two of your fretting hand while playing that would be good.
