hi peeps I'm looking for some advice, i play in a band,we're only amateur playing covers at the moment but I'm really eager to start writing my own riffs and songs but don't know where to start.... i can learn to play most songs , I'm an OK guitarist but I'm just stuck in the rut of playing covers, everything i try and make up just ends up sounding like one of the many covers we've played.....help..

There really isn't a secret formula to writing music. Just start doing it and you will get better the more you do it.

Here's an exercise for you that I usually try to do. Try to write at least one new thing every day, even if it's only 20 or 30 seconds long sometimes.

Try learning new chords you've never played in a song before.

I agree with that, and to expand a little, learning new styles or techniques you have never played in a song.
