This is a genuine used Fender MIM strat with a licensed Floyd Rose trem going on sale for USD$155. I ran the serial number through the guitar dater project and it was made in the Ensenada Mexico Plant in 1996-1997.

I thought it'd be this one

http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=1144700309

But if you look closely the one in the reference page above has 3 knobs whereas the one in the pic only has 2. An older version perhaps?

Any general opinions/experiences with FRs on stratocasters?

(PS yes I'm aware this should be in EG but I trust GGnA more )

Only two knobs? A little sketchy, but why don't you ask the guy if you can just go down there and look at it?

The only ways I've ever seen a Fender Strat with two knobs were done by previous owners, I think that's a custom wiring job personally.

Dude obviously they will be spec changes over the years. As long as the serial number checks out you should be ok.

It's legit, right? I know I'm being so anal about it, but here in Hong Kong you get so many fakes its ridiculous.

Pretty sure thats legit. The MIMS with factory fitted floyds from that time came with floyd rose II's which that has. Also the headstock and serial definatly checks out.
#9
it could be many things. maybe it's a frankenstrat with the neck from a MIM strat, maybe it's just an aftermarket re-wiring job, maybe it's a one of a kind original. the most important point is: do you like it?

I must be getting old.

Can you read off that Serial Number?

You know there are several serial look up sites to check as well as fender.com as well as sending fender an email.

i believe that in 1981 (or around that time) some strats were made with 2 knobs in order to cut down costs as well as having the jack a normal one not into the wood
#15
I already checked it through. It's legit (see OP). Just wanted to make sure since I'm paranoid.

drunk posting ftl

fyi - some of those serial numbers were goofy back then too so it never hurts to send your info along to fender.com. they are pretty good about giving out helpful info. i'd never seen a 2 knob with a FR so i jumped the gun on my post.

Sorry.

I just picked it up .

This thing feels beautiful. Gonna have to learn how to use an FR though.

I'll post an NGD in a week or two, after I get a feel for this.

i know there is really no reason to post this but.

but i did modify it, total rewire job. also got a coil tap for the HB. don't know of any stock ones with 2 knobs though.

and also, i don't know of anyone knocking off mexican strats. if you wanna do a knock off you migh as well do an american strat...

either way, good deal on the guitar. i like those 90's MIM's, i got a red tele myself, from '96, bought it brand new when i was in high school. great guitar for the cash

I just broke one of the strings cause I have no idea how to tune these ****ing FR bridges

Love the feel. Had to clean all the gunk out from the fretboard cause this guitar hasn't been touched in 10 years. It's gone all creamy yellow. Pickups are rusted and the input jack is loose but this is all simple stuff.

BTW nice axe you have there gumbi.

don't dig on the floyd myself either. i don't mind how they play so much as their tempermental nature. tuning is down by the bridge though, which you really do get used to after a while cuz it's convenient as all hell.

thx, my strat was the body and design i wanted; then i gutted all the electronics. i would prefer a maple fretboard to the rosewood one i got, but it is a great hunk of wood either way.
