In short terms for anyone else reading this, combo amps are designed to be reasonably portable, as well as having the best possible sound that they can achieve. A head and cab on the other hand is built for gigging, which combo amps of a decent size can do, but the cab and head can achieve a slightly richer sound as well as a higher natural level of volume.

It's all based on what your level of playing is and what you do as a player, be it bedroom jamming or career based shows.

Not necessarily.
Marshall amplifiers are the truest purveyors of rock and roll known to man.

yeah, throwing a mic on the front and back of a open back cab is an old studio trick that people love. allowing for sound to propagate both out the front and back of the cab can mellow the 'beaming' quality usually found in 4x12 closed back cabs.

i like using both myself.

Open back cabs have more bass, it's just not as tight as the bass you do get from a closed back one.
