I'd really recommend looking for a Roland SH-201. It speeds up the learning curve and really helps you understand how the synth is working, which makes it a lot easier to start creating your own sounds. It's got a great patch editing program that allows you to edit in real time via your computer, plus a patch library software.

Plus the D-Beam is really fun to play around with

The micron and microkorg are good, they're just a bit tougher to start out on if you're not familiar with synths...

Well, they're all pretty different... I still think the 201 is better than the micron for sure (it's also the most expensive of the 3). As far as the microkorg, if you need vocoding, then obviously that's your pick. I think the Roland has a better arpeggiator, as well as being more useful in terms of MIDI.

If you want more range of keys, also keep in mind that the microkorg only has 3 octaves of physical keys at a time. It has less features, but it's probably a better deal for the price.

I hope that more information comes in this thread because I'm in the same situation with looking into synths.

Unfortunately my knowledge of synths is conveniently limited to these 3 synths lol

I was in the same boat, looking at the microkorg and micron. I spent a long time playing on both, then found an awesome deal on the SH-201 on craigslist so I bought it, and man am I glad I did cause I liked it way more than either the korg or alesis.

I only have experience with the Fantom Series from roland and the Juno and X3. Sorry bro. the Fantom FA and XA can be found for cheapz like 500 ish if you are lucky, but learning curve is a littel steep. Best advice is to trawl Clist and look at the original sale price of the keyboard and see how much in ( or out in alot of cases) of date the keyboards are. Chances are if it sold for 600 + when it first came out and came out after 2001~2002 chances are it'll be decent. The biggest thing you have to look for is the sound quality of the samples and how the player will like the action from the keys. some keyboardist hate non hamered keys, others like kinda life like keys etc.

cool. i just need a great sound for interludes and intros (metalcore/post hardcore band)

so the synth isnt in constant use. and is simply used. nothing technical.

I can recommend the Micro Korg. A buddy of mine got one a week ago and it took us like 20 minutes to figure it all out. They really aren't that complicated.

We aren't using it for live stuff, but it's incredible in the studio.
