welp i got a guitar for practically nothing (i wanted something to kinda practice fixing) and right now the nut on it SUCKS. and since i live where bones are readily available i thought i'd just make my own. so any advice on doing this? and will any solid bone work?

you need solid bone preferably from the knuckle of the cow i think i forget
then you have to prepare it remove all meat and fat boil it and degrease it
then cut it and shape it to a rough nut shape
im sure theres a better explanation somewhere on google on how to do it
but then you have to make the radius of the fretboard but higher like a nut would be and then cut the slots which is the tricky part to get the spacing perfectly but just follow your old nut as a template using a way to cut the string slot i use a combination of dremel guitar string and a couple of nut files i bought

searched for about 2 hours and came up pretty empty handed, i don't need to know howto do the whole thing, justkinda like the things that aren't real obvious or the little tricky things

A friend of mine carved one out of deer bone for his strat, it took him 2-4 hours to do (I don't remember exactly how long) and it turned out pretty well. The only downside was that he cut the slots a little too deep and now the action is a little too low to play slide, but that's what a spare guitar is for.
Me and my girlfriend were in a guitar store one day.

My GF- What's the difference between Gibson and Epiphone?

Me- (Explains)

GF- So Epiphone is like Gibson's slutty little sister?

Me- I love you.

i boiled every thing off then just took a sander for days on end. :P

took me a week for a perfect nut. But cutting it into a rough shape first would be better.

I'd assume so but, you'd have to be really careful as to not like break it or cut to deep though. Thats probably why they always make them with hand tools
