I was looking at a Vox Valvetronix VT30 or VT50...

Looks pretty cool being that it is a tube modelling amp and it won't break the bank

What genres are you going to play?

For $300-400 you could do a hell of a lot better on the used market, hell even on the new market.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

I think he means an amp that models tubes.

But hey, digital tubes do exist, so you're just flat out wrong.

Are you willing to go used?

Don't look at the Vypyrs that cost more than 150 bucks. Any higher than that and you can find amps used that are much better at certain things, and are very affordable.

For 350 you can easily snatch a used JCA20H plus the cab, for 250 you could get the combo.

The Vox VT series DOES sound good IMO, although they are not tube amps. TBH I like them a lot better than the Vypyrs at that price range.

+1 to the JCA20w combo

Only problem you would have would be channel switching. You would also have to buy effects and such, but its a great amp for band practice and venues i hear.

Even then TS, you could still get a JCA2112 for 360 brand new. Then save a bit more, and get a boost.

There's a Daddy's Junky Music in Syracuse, right? Head down there and go try some amps.

Which reminds me, the next time I need to get out of my grandmother's house I can head down there... perfect.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

Don't those require some modding to stop them from sounding really harsh and fizzy?
