Hey Guys,

I know Imma gonna get flamed, but I really need to know: What Is the point of Mosh Pits?

I was speaking to my friend who went to Slayer gig last year, I asked her what songs did they play and she names a few songs and then was like um I can't remember I was to busy in the Mosh Pit.

I mean you pay so much money to go to a gig and ya end up dancing around.

Edit: She mainly went there for Slayer, as they were headlining.

A mosh pit is like a fountain of youth, only instead of being a fountain, it's like a pit. And instead of youth, it's got awesome in.

It is a good way to release the energy you get when you listen to good music.

Have you ever gotten really pumped when you listened to a song you like a lot? Moshing is a good way to use the energy you get.

It's fun, and it's also inspiring when you're on stage to see your fans having fun and getting involved. I hate it when people just stand around at my shows. I want them to get into pits and stuff.

Pits today aren't like what pits used to be.
Too many thrash kids practicing their fag-fu karate kicks and shit.
I remember when people would just jump and bounce around and have fun, not try to punch each other in the throat.

I don't know. I don't see the enjoyment in getting smacked in the face while being deafened.

I'm too small to mosh but I understand it. Metal makes you want to move and when it's so loud and in your face you want to more. I would mosh at Slayer too, I'd need a distraction every now and then. I want to see them to say I've seen them but I'd have trouble determining which song was which.

EDIT: Ok, Yhdeksas brought this up. Moshing is NOT hardcore dancing. Hardcore dancing has kicking and a lot of dangerous shit in it. It just so happens that both happen in the same place. Moshers shove and jump. If someone falls, people help them up so they don't get trampled. Hardcore dancers kick and punch and do weird shit. People get hurt, sometimes on purpose. I've had a shoe within three inches of my face because of people hardcore dancing in a small venue.

What's the point of anything?

Some people just like to mosh. I think it's stupid - I don't want to pay 100 bucks for a ticket so I can ignore the band and slam myself into a bunch of hyped up fruitbars.

But that's my opinion.
Do you feel warm within your cage?

Uniting the audience with the energy of the show. You can pick up the album and listen to the songs with all due focus any time you like. Mosh pits are a great way to let go of your ego and become one with the energy of the crowd, performers, and music.
#17
Concerts are boring when the crowd just stand there bopping their heads. I tend not to get in the pits but I do my fair share of rhythmic jumping with random, drunk strangers!
#18
Apparently its fun to run into each other and injure yourself...

We sometimes have these sort of 'mosh pits' at school. When there's a big crowd blocking the way, the yr 7s would just chrage headfirst into them.

Concerts can give you shit tons of adrenaline. It's fun to jump around and be brutal. I myself don't really enjoy pain, and try to get in front of the pits so I can get a great view right up front.

+1. i wish my band had enough clout that when no one was moshing we could just pack it up and leave the stage. it's a total boner-killer and pretty much takes the fun out of playing.

in retrospective thats true
I see the performance because thats what the band wants to show

if you think about it you can get a live CD and a lot of people in one place and mosh with deafening vol. and its the same.As for the feeling of being in a concert, that is a illusion in the brain.

People are responsible for deciding if they're ready for a pit. My friend and I would go to shows together, he would mosh and I wouldn't. I'm a small guy and I can't handle that stuff, he's a bigger guy and can take it. Hardcore dancing and moshing are mixing and it's messing everything up. People are starting to hit on purpose.

Lots of morons trying to hurt others giving mosh pits a bad name. Saw one guy with a gas mask launch himself backwards into a pit with his elbow stuck outwards. I foolishly jumped in and before I knew it I was on the ground with blood spewing from my nose.

This. I'm just 150 lbs, man. I may be 6'2", but that doesn't mean you can hit me in the face when its a mosh pit. Save that sh*t for hardcore concerts.

and he said people were throwing people around there were people kicking each other and jumping on each other.
Apparently this is a signature

At some gigs, if people see others hardcore dancing (at shows that aren't appropriate) then they can get dragged out by others, and even security.

Mosh pits have a tendency to turn to crap if too many people are being kung-brutal. But a good show is just people running, jumping, smashing into eachother, but not target specific people. Having fun in this way will result in some people getting elbows to the face or a foot between the ribs. But they're not dangerous. I went to see Gogol Bordello in Vermont a few weeks ago, and it was the best concert I've ever been to. The pits were fantastic. It was just dust flying everywhere, people running, jumping, and pushing hippies.
