I was talking to one of my friends today, and at some point we got on the subject of actors. I mentioned that I think Bill Murray is one of the great comedians of our time, not the greatest but he's pretty good, and my friend said I was just weird. Bewildered, I asked if he had seen Ghostbusters, and he said he had, but Bill Murray was just reading a script, and that does not take talent. After a bit of telling him that he's wrong and acting takes talent, I ended the phone call, frustrated. Then the idea came to me, that I should ask the pit.

So, does acting take talent? Is there a certain art to reading a script?
There shall be a poll momentarily.

Of course acting takes talent, It's like asking if playing guitar takes talent, anyone can play guitar and anyone can act but it takes talent to be known.

Yes.
All you have to do is see someone trying despeately to act well and failing miserably(like hayden christiansen, or whatever his name is) to know that acting takes talent.

Lost In Translation wasn't that bad.

Acting takes no talent.

Acting convincingly requires A LOT of talent. So, that would be yes.

It takes talent to act well but it also takes talent to write a good script, be it comedy or drama

Tell your idiot of a friend to watch Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation, Bill Murray is a God amongst men.

Who said I was putting down scripts? Scripts are most important, but some great acting can save a bad movie, Jackie Earle Haley in that Elm Street thing just recently is proof.

The way i read it seemed to me like your friend was saying Bill Murray just reads a script, even though from what ive heard Bill Murray does a lot of his own lines, so thats where the script writing came from

If you have to ask this question, you've clearly never seen The Room.

As a former (and soon to be again) actor, I can sum it all up in the line "Acting is glorified lying."

Of course it takes talent to be a good actor. You are trying to convince your audience that you are somebody completely different than your actual self. Not to mention that most good actors pretty such only take cues from the script and re-write it around themselves.

Comedy acting is something else completely. A good comedic actor has to have perfect timing for the punchline. If not the joke can be completely ruined.

Every genre and role requires something completely different. Sure there are people such as Keanu Reeves, Pauly Shore, and Micheal Cera that play the same role every film. But then again those aren't very good actors.

Acting takes imagination, not talent. (If you think I'm talking out of my ass, I was the lead role in a movie that comes out next month.) You take the story and react as you would had you been placed in said scenarion with sadi characters' personality. It's really that simple.

I haven't actually. To be honest, I want to see it just to see how incredibly terrible it is. I may torrent it next time I've got nothing to do.

He wasn't acting. He was being a brain dead teenager. Which he was back then.

I don't see why it shouldn't. I mean, all actors just "read from a script". Compare anyone else to Robert Downey Jr., for example. [/Asskissing]

Besides from that.

Have you ever actually heard them play before? No? And don't say "THEY JUST PLAY POWERCHORDS IN THE RECORDINGS!?!?" because there are so many musicians that don't show their "full potential", they just focus on the song and the entertainment.

Why would you want to make something hard for yourself? A good performance is one without mistakes, less complicated music means less mistakes which means a better show for everyone.

This was to dannyboy by the way.
