Okay, I'm turning 16 this year so that means I could get a job, however, I have long hair and want my lip pierced. I honestly don't look "right" with a shorter hair cut, my hair's about shoulder length, so it isn't ridiculously long. Would employers be prejudiced towards that appearance? I do need to get a job to get some money, so being unemployed isn't an option.

I can tell you right now as a 16 year old with shoulder length hair that yes it will be a problem, depending on where you apply. I have applied at places and they have said that my hair was a problem.

Some of them might, but as long as it's clean and presentable, preferably straightened or styled in some way, then it shouldn't be a problem.
Just make sure you do take care of it, this might just be me but I find long greasy/unkept hair is just disgusting, and that would definitely put people off.

working in food, your hair will most likely be a problem. retail...not so much, as long as you look presentable. The lip ring will most likely have to go unless you work at hot topic or something.

Probably.

My girlfriend was rejected for a job around here for having a very small tattoo on her wrist and purple hair.

She was also rejected for "not having the right image" for a clothing store (Which is a nice way of saying she was built bigger than they like. She's a bigger girl with curves but to not employ her for that is pathetic).

Ditch the lip ring if you want a job. You should probably get a hair cut as well. Jobs are hard to get right now, and if a manager has a choice, a 16 year old kid with no work experience, long hair, and facial piercings is never going to get hired.

You aren't that serious about looking for work then. It isn't them who are set out to please your needs, it's what you can offer the company. Comply with their regulations or look elsewhere.

I should have added that first part to my post. Cutting your hair and looking presentable is going to help you immensely.

I'm not serious about looking for work because I'm 15. Read a bit better next time. I also don't have a lip ring, I was looking to get one. I was wondering if I would be getting judged for my appearance, which I will. That's all I needed to know, I'll get a bit shorter of a cut and not get my lip pierced.

You only need to be 14 to have a job though? At least in Florida. I applied at the local grocery store, didn't get a call, failed the Walmart application test online (LOOK UP TIPS BEFORE TAKING IT) and you need to be 16 at the other places I could work.

Count on it. It's their job to judge you to see if you're cut out to work there.

I'm 15 now. I have to be 16 to get a job. My lip is lacking a ring. I was looking to get one.

Is it really that complicated?

Most places will, but you can still work at places like hot topic and pac sun. Almost everywhere will care if your hair looks clean. Don't be one of those nasty-ass, greasy haired metalhead types. It looks disgusting anyway. Also, it's not really that the managers will be prejudiced toward your appearance. It's companies that don't want facial piercings or long hair because it looks unprofessional and they're trying to attract customers to increase revenue.

they're complete dumbasses if they'd rather have someone who's incompetent but who has "normal" hair.

That's not to say they're not complete dumbasses, of course.

Sounds like employers to me. It depends on where you're looking for jobs, if you have a piercing and look for jobs as a homemade cookies salesman you might find it difficult, but if it's for some alternative gothic lifestyle shop you have better luck.

that's what i meant

and yeah agreed about the type of job.

and much as i hate to admit it, occasionally they can be right- i mean if you're scaring off customers (customers can be dumbasses too), that's not really going to help the business...

Definitely avoid the lip piercing. Most jobs won't allow it. At least none where you come into contact with potential customers, which is mostly the type of job you'll be able to find at your age.

The hair isn't as much of a problem, but some places do have policies regarding hair length and such. Your best bet would be to ask the employer during the interview. If they have a policy about long hair, assure them you will be willing to cut it if you are hired.
