In fact, sugar meets all the criteria for an addictive substance:

It stimulates release of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, in a manner similar to alcohol, cocaine, and other drugs of abuse.
People eat it compulsively, despite negative consequences and the intention to stop.
With continued use, people develop a tolerance to its effects.
Heavy sugar consumers have trouble functioning without it.
When consumption ceases, withdrawal symptoms occur.

Is sugar an addictive substance? Discuss. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that I actually am addicted.

I don't think I'm addicted. I don't normally go out of my way to eat something with a lot of sugar in it.

Sad as it sounds i do need a chocolate bar a day and go kinda stir-crazy if i don't have one - but i'm perfectly fine with not having one.

I have had days/weeks where i haven't had chocolate (and not substituted it with another sugar product) - so i wouldn't say i'm addicted.

But it can be addictive, it's a feel good food - therefore we'll always have it.

Yes, I'm addicted to sugar.

It's a real kick in the balls, especially as I'm diabetic.

Is this new news? Hasn't everyone always known that sugar is addictive?

It's an addictive substance, yes, and I'm really not addicted to it. I rarely eat things with much sugar in them. When I do however... feels good man.

Okay let's rewrite your sentence.

It's an addictive substance, yes, and I'm really not addicted to it. I rarely snort things with much cocaine in them. When I do however... feels good man.

That's junkie speech!

I have a very bad sweet tooth. So from my point of view sugar can be very additive

Absolutely. The Government recommends 300g of carbohydrates a day, which far FAR exceeds what is healthy.
