basically my question is: is it any good? im starting high school this week and ive already met several musicians who would be looking to start a band. right now, all i have is a 20 watt practice amp and probably some time in the near future i will need a gig amp. i play alot of metal and hard rock and some alternative stuff, and ive read some good reviews about it.

So is it worth 500 bucks, or is it crap? and if the latter is true, any suggestions???

Don't even consider it. Post a little more detail on your playing styles and suggestions will come.

Also list budget.

well as u can tell by my name, i obviously like slipknot, or used to at least, but i play pretty much all types of metal except death metal, mostly stuff released post-2000. and im not looking to spend a huge amount. im not trying to get the ultimate 3000 dollar marshall stacks. just something with a decent tone i can use for smaller venues

Line 6 Spider =/= decent tone.
For the love of God. Do not get a Spider. Or a Marshall MG.
Look for a used Peavey 6505 maybe. That's supposed to be good for post-2000 metal.

Wow, someone who actually takes the advice on the Spider and isn't like "BUT IT HAS INSANE ROCKSTAR SETTINGS" (really, that's what my 15 watt one says on the box!)

You'll be much, much happier with the Peavey. Go for it!

It's not to say you can't get a good amp in that price range. I had a Peavey Vypyr 75 solid-state amp and it was perfectly serviceable while I was still a relative beginner.

I think the reason people hate Spiders so much is not that they sound so bad, but that there are so many better options in the same price range.

This. The Valve MKII is the only one from the Spider lineup I consider to be more than a bedroom practice amp. The tube amplification and better speakers make a world of a difference.
