Well it seems that to record into a computer, you need an interface to stop it sounding like it's underwater - right?

This is just for one mic, or amp at a time. The most basic option possible that lets me record into the computer.

So, what's the cheapest interface out there that works and won't break? I'm almost definitely looking at second hand here. I've had a look through eBay but there's nothing cheap except the really cheap unbranded guitar into computer usb interface that looks like it will break instantly.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Probably your cheapest option then is to go for a USB or Firewire audio interface, like this one...

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrack.html

That is a USB one, but if you have firewire then i advise getting a firewire only one, as the data transfer is alot faster.

I would make sure that you have a USB 2.0 port, and not the old USB 1.0, i had to buy a new USB 2.0 PCI card for my desk top cause all my USB ports were old and crap.

I personaly dont use a USB interface, i use an internal PCI card as my interface, but that means lots of extra equipment like a mixer to get it recording. So if your budgeted, then go for a One 1/4 inch jack in and (like the link) a Female input for a mic.

I could recomend any M-audio product, i own

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile192.html

(my recording interface) £130

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileQ40.html

(my mixing headphones £105

and they serve my brilliantly, so i see no reason why their usb interfaces shouldnt live up to this standard

Nah I don't have firewire (as far as I know) and USB is a whole lot simpler. All I really need is a 1/4 input into the computer, but going straight in with the mic (which is mic'ing an amp) makes it sound like it's underwater when it gets louder >..<

To put things into perspective: I'm currently mic'ing my marshall MS2 mini amp and using free software which doesn't even have a click track.

So, as good as the stuff you have looks I'm basically just looking for the absolute basic and that M-Audio FastTrack is just too expensive for me. Is there anything simpler around?

Wow, okay, wow.

You sir, need some amp modeling software or else you are gonna end up with really shitty recordings.
