It's a popularity thing, not an actual who's best.

Most will disagree with it, but it sold a million copies of a magazine so of course hey printed it.

I looked at the list and said "wtf is this"
Gear for the moment:
Epiphone Goth Explorer (w/stock pickups)
Peavey Vypyr 15 watt Amp
Boss PW-10 V-Wah Pedal

I don't know, it's difficult to argue with Hendrix, but I would have guitarists like Knopfler and Capaldi much higher up.

Mosts lists, in just about any field of work and certainly art, are impossible to fulfill satisfactory. Most of Rolling Stones lists are junk in my opinion, but one mans treasure is another mans gold. I wish it would have been a 100 or even 500 greatest "soloists" instead, instrument be damned...but electric guitar did have a tremendous impact on the Rolling Stone generation.

Rolling Stone is a shell of what it used to be, and I attribute at least half of that to losing Hunter S. Thompson. The other half is they're no different than TMZ now.

isnt Kurt Cobain in the top 20 or something retarded like that?

guy should go down as one of the worst famous guitar players ever, not the best

Obviously the Rolling Stone is aimed toward career sucess rather than technical playing ability. Music is too subjective to have a "who's better than who" type list.

+1. Everybody is different, so they aren't going to like the same guitarist. And, it pretty much is a popularity contest.

How to achieve Frank Zappa's guitar tone:
Quote by Thefallofman
Step 1: Buy a Gibson SG
Step 2: Insert Green Ringer, EQ, 3 dead squirrels and a microwave into said SG
Step 3: Plug in and freak the **** out.
