I know it will probably vary from song to song but as a standard (for practice), well I know you dont let the notes ring out atall when another note is being played but how long exactly should these notes last untuil the next one is played.

Should I practice playing harsh staccato jabs or let them ring through to the start of the next note and then mute them??

This. Each note (generaly) rings right until the next note is struck

You could either let the notes ring in to each other, or you could have only one note sounding at a time. Depends what sound you want really. I believe that normally sweeping is done one note at a time, not ringing into each other.

All depends what you think sounds good really.
