To acheive maximum results we must apply what I refer to as the four T's. Without them you can't ever expect to reach an advanced level. I ask my private students to constantly repeat them. Here they are and in order of importance IMO.
Timing (should always be top priority)
Technique (Not performing the correct techs will usually defeat timing)
Tone (The timber or sound quality is very important but only after Timing and tech is mastered)
Theory ( Only need if you want your own identity but everyone should)
