Which job do you think is the most overpaying (in the sense that the importance of the job or requirements are not really proportionate to the salary)?

Not necessarily which job pays the most money. Nowadays, in the U.S. at least, a CEO can make one of their employees yearly salary in a day. A guy who came out with a couple hit songs can make more than a doctor. Kirstie Alley got really fat and because of that, she's been getting even more rich due to publicity.

Which job(s) do you think overpay the most in this sense, generally speaking?

Pop stars. They don't have to write the songs, are easy to perform, and lots and lots of money and fame.

I always thought professional athletes were over paid. I would rather see a fire fighter get paid 50 million dollars over 10 years than Shaq.

Thing is, we pay athletes and footballers, so we can't really complain.

Seconded.

Most of them are only famous because they have connections, and an image that is appealing to 12 year olds.

There are some exceptions, but a lot of chart-toppers hardly deserve their fame.

Couple hours a week? You forget the many hours of practice they have to devote each day. And while yes, they are overpaid, they still have to work very hard, which means they're not the MOST overpaid. imo.

Stop saying pro athletes. It's just a classic case of supply and demand. Do they get paid too much for playing a game? Yes. Do they get paid too much for being among the best handful in the world? Not really.

The most overpayed people in our are the "pop culture celebrities. The Real World, Jersey
Shore, Kardashians, you name it. They have very little significance and are only paid because they are promoted as special.

They provide entertainment, just like athletes do. That's the only significance either of them provide.

The two are on par, you just place a higher significance on athletic performance because you have a penis.

Athletes are definitely NOT the most overpaid. During the season, their life is that sport. They train, play, and travel, and that's about all they have time to do. Not to mention the tremendous pressure to perform.

I wouldn't mind the 'tremendous pressure' for 200 grand a week.

Athlete's are definitely overpaid, but that's capitalism. Someone who saves people's lives is given a medal, someone who saves a penalty is given 100 grand.

Okay, then pick your game up so you can play for millions of critical fans.

Anyways, I agree that pop stars are way overpaid.

The thing with footballers being overpaid is that their role in society isn't as important as the one of doctors, teachers, policemen, etc. regardless of how much money they 'generate'.

Yes, but he founded a company and created those products. What he started wasn't being done by many other people at the time. He innovated. Athletes are overpaid, but they have to work hard most of the season so I wouldn't say they're the MOST overpaid. But what do you expect when they're that popular? Pop stars might be the most overpaid, because they really don't have that much work to do, because unlike lots of other musicians, they don't have to write their own music, it's written for them and all they do is sing it (which isn't anything special, it's just combined with their looks)

Yeah, and our pop culture celebrities get paid that much because of supply and demand too. Why they get paid what they do is not the question. The question is who gets paid the most and is the least important to society.

That being the question, I'm mentioning both of the careers in your post.
Professional athletes: Yeah, their job is incredibly physically demanding and I could never do it, but the amount they get paid just to play a game is absolutely ridiculous.

Celebrities that are famous just for being famous (Major example: Jersey Shore's cast, Heidi Montag and her chimp): They get paid more money than pretty much anyone reading this will make in their lifetime, and they contribute literally nothing to society.

Most underpaid? It's been said a million times, and it can't be said enough: TEACHERS. A thousand times, teachers. Especially nowadays with the way their students tend to act, and the fact that some teachers actually have their lives threatened at some of the worse-off schools.

I'm not saying they're not overpaid, but I think that athletes, pop stars, etc. play a more important role in society than people make them out to. Imagine getting rid of everyone whose work is to provide others with entertainment. Society would be vastly different, and a lot more bland, I would think.
