I have Guitar Pro 5 downloaded onto my computer.... yet any time i try to open up a "Guitar Pro" tab, no tab is shown. Like maybe the site isn't recognizing that I have the software downloaded or something? Very confused!!!

try saving the file to your computer first maybe? sometimes just opening off the website confuses guitar pro.

Did you pirate it? If so, I don't know but maybe pirated versions can be a bit dodgy or something.

Doesn't it automatically download it and you open it from there? I click the download tab button, it brings up the chrome download bar, when the file's finished downloading (usually 2-3 seconds) I click it, guitar pro opens with the tab.

Try saving it somewhere, then open guitar pro and open it from there.

Thx.

yeah try saving it to your desktop or something? also are you running it on a PC or mac? try reinstalling it if all else fails. if you pirated it, maybe try a different source. if you feel like it, you could try upgrading to guitar pro 6 (although im not sure if i like it or not yet)

I think this is your problem:
You think guitar pro is a browser application, to open guitar pro tabs in your browser.
This is not true
Guitar pro is a stand-alone program on your PC.
You have to download the .gp5 files from the internets first, and then open them with the program guitar pro on your PC.

I always thought both ways worked: opening it, and saving it directly to your hardrive.

For me, whenever I simply 'Open As' (making sure that GP5 is selected), it doesn't save the file but immediately opens it. If I click 'Save As', it saves into my GP5 folder and, depending on how I've set the options, does or does not automactically open the file.

You may also have to check that the folder you're downloading isn't a tab created with GP6. I'm not sure on this, but I know that you sometimes can't open GP4 folders with GP5, and visa versa.

You probably only downloaded the trial version. The trail version allows you to create tabs but does not allow you to save them. The trial version also does not allow you to save and open tabs in the trial. I think this is your problem.
