Hey guys!

im going out tomorrow to buy my first ever tube amp!

it's a 50 watt head, known as the epiphone so cal 50.

since i'm going used, i would like some advice, about what to look out for.

i know tube color is important, but what else?

also, is an EQ on a tube amp powered by a 12AX7?

if the EQ doesn't work properly, could this be caused by tube failure?

Thanks in advance!

1 - make sure it's connected to a proper cab, wattage, ohms etc.

2 - let it get warm and play it at band volume.

3 - check all the dials and make sure everything works correctly.

4 - tube color? i guess, but never worried as long as i could see them all come to life.

5 - i believe the eq is driven by the circuit more than a tube, but i'll let the amp builders answer that, i'm not one.

6 - what kind of music do you play?
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

Most amp EQs are passive, so they're not driven by a tube.

Gregs pretty much got all of it.

IIRC, tone stacks are usually driven by a cathode follower 12AX7 triode to prevent massive signal loss. They don't boost signal, though.
