if i have a little fret buzz, is it okay to just raise the action a little bit using the saddle? or will that mess things up?

Do they still make "Scratch-n-sniff" stickers? That'd be kewl, and if you get bored with playing, you can just smell your guitar. lol

If you have fret buzz, you will want to raise the posts that balance/mount the bridge, if you're using a stoptail-type bridge. The saddles are the individual pieces that the strings go across towards the bottom of the bridge.

You won't hurt anything. Just loosen your string, adjust as necessary, retune, and if you still have probs just try again until it feels right. Trial and error, my friend!

Bear in mind that if you raise your string height at all, you're increasing the length of the strings. That being the case, you'll need to adjust your intonation.
