So, I'm getting into playing guitar, and I keep seeing things like this pop up in tabs:

e|-----------------|------------------|-----------------|------------------|
B|-----------------|------------------|-----------------|------------------|
G|-------------3-3-|-0------------6-6-|-------------3-3-|-0------------6-6-|
D|-3--3-3-xxxx-3-3-|-06--6-6-xxxx-6-6-|-3--3-3-xxxx-3-3-|-06--6-6-xxxx-6-6-|
A|-3--3-3-xxxx-1-1-|-06--6-6-xxxx-4-4-|-3--3-3-xxxx-1-1-|-06--6-6-xxxx-4-4-|
E|-1--1-1-xxxx-----|--4--4-4-xxxx-----|

How do you play the "xxxx" parts? I'm trying to figure out how to mute it right to get the sound(it's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana) and just can't get it right.

In "Smells Like Teen Spirit" you just kind of pick the E,A, and D strings while you mute the strings with your fretting hand. Well, that is how I play it for the intro anyways. You might have to strum kind of hard though to get a good sound.

EDIT: Oh and it's not a dumb question lol.

EDIT 2: When you're doing the muting during the rest of the song when you have distortion then you'll want to do a regular palm mute. Just look up a cover of the song and see what they do. It's pretty simple and easy once you get it down.

WHERE IS MY PICK?

tbh I dont bother palm muting but I just lift the pressure off on my fretting fingers.
