Tomorrow I'm playing for my church and during communion time I need something to play for background music... it can't be too fast, distracting or too hard to learn (I need to learn it tonight) I can't play anything recognizable, as it may be too distracting (songs from relatively unknown bands are fine)

can anyone point me at a nice classical or modern song that would sounds nice as background music

If at first you don't succeed, play bass.

More Than Words - Extreme
About A Girl - Nirvana
Marine Layer - Paul Gilbert
Windowpane - Opeth (might work)
Glory of the Empire (intro) - Circus Maximus

Yeah, go with Windowpane.

Or just pick a nice melancholic chord progression and arpeggiate it slowly.

I'm liking marine layer more than windowpane... are there any songs similar to that I could possibly use

Just play some I-IV-V chord progressions. Or I-IV-vi-V. or i-iv-v...or any basic popular chord progression. Since it's church, maybe do some suspended chords, and have them resolve to the right chord or whatever?

Let's take it one step further and add a slogan:

You should have played something like the Animals song where they sing "I'm just a soul who's intentions are good, oh lord, please don't let me be misunderstood" Or who sings that one song "Jesus is just alright with me" 8-) Those are both songs form the 60's or 70's I think.

How about the theme from Princess Bride. It's easy, light and it's pretty classical so it would bode well in a church setting.

Classical Gas

Or if that's not quite your speed,

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The slower movement. Not the fast one.
