Usually, it's OK to assume that coincidences happen, but when it happens within the same genre it's less believable. These two have a very very similar melody. So do you think this is common, and show some examples, but within the same genre.

The chorus-like part of "Sleepyhead" by Passion Pit is almost the exact same as the beginning of the guitar solo of Weezer's "Beverly Hills".

Also, most of the music on the top 40 right now. There is a Katy Perry song and a Kesha song that use almost the same vocal melody in the chorus and the lyrics are similar. The local stations here all play the same six songs that sound similar. Well, most of them.

By the way, I'm not just bitching about pop music, I only even know these songs becasue everybody else I live with listens to it. I was just using an example.
