Another track off the new album, done in a very tongue in cheek ben folds style. A rare "happy" song for me. c4c as always.

This Is A Love Song (Not An Arms Race)

Hello lady
looking at me from behind her third or fourth glass of wine
I can see you desperately trying to decide if you should leave
or just humour me
well maybe one more glass you think
and drink and listen maybe half-heartedly to what I sing

hello
slightly geeky looking guy
with slightly out of his league girl
who’s making eyes at the guy five seats over
but he’s too busy on his phone to notice
complaining to his friend about my failed homage to guns and roses
in his opinion even worse than axle rose’s
excuse me if I’m supposed to laugh

I’m writing you a rock and roll song on my piano
to prove I’m intellectual
and sensitive to all your feelings
I hope that you don’t misunderstand
and think it somehow implies
that I’m inferior or not quite man enough for heavy noise
and screaming guitars
it’s just that I’m better at piano
than I am at playing guitar

hello
couple with five kids
juggling conversation over screams and provocation
“billy don’t pull your sister’s hair!”
for god’s sake don’t you even care
I’m trying to make my living singing half arse covers
to half arse mother’s like you?

So I’m writing you a rock and roll song on my piano
to prove I’m intellectual
and sensitive to all your feelings
I hope that you don’t misunderstand
and think it somehow implies
that I’m inferior or not quite man enough for heavy noise
and screaming guitars
it’s just that I’m better at piano
than I am at playing guitar

And maybe when I’m famous
I can sing out of my anus
writing songs about my bling and multi story million dollar mansions
till then yes remains the answer
to your request “Tiny Dancer”
“Bad Romance” Yes
“Piano Man” Yes
“Free Bird” oh, come on!

I’m just writing you a rock and roll song on my piano
to prove I’m intellectual
and sensitive to all your feelings
I hope that you don’t misunderstand
and think it somehow implies
that I’m inferior or not quite man enough for heavy noise
and screaming guitars
it’s just that I’m better at piano
than I am at playing guitar

Again, this reminds me of your last piece. It has a nice vibe... and I can't point to something and say that I don't like this... but in the end, it really doesn't effect me in any way other than I know I read it. It's very... you. It reminds me a bit of the tone in your novel. However, it just doesn't carry much weight beyond the obvious... and so I don't think it has much beyond a surface area. I was hoping for some volume.

Yeah there wasn't much of a plan here for any volume behind the obvious, more just an attempt on my part to be more upbeat for once, instead of my usually stream of depressive shite.

it reads to me as you're just taking shots at yourself. i mean maybe if i heard the song it would come off differently but the big question is who is your target audience here?

is it girls?
band kids?
the kid who doesn't get the girl?
the kid who plays piano?
all of the above?

cause girls want to hear they're beautiful not better than.
band kids want to hear well music you may have been dead on with this.
the kid who doesn't get the girl would rather hear about the kid who doesn't get the girl being awesome cause they dont get the girl or that the kid who doesnt get the girl gets the girl.
the kid who plays piano ... well im not gonna tell you what you think but i would assume they would love the piano and not down play it to guitar.

it just reads as self loathing which i get. music is an outlet but i dont think this is something you could get an audience behind

It's about my life pretty much, my experience playing at restaurants and cafes, etc. I play both piano and guitar, but as the song states I am much better at piano than guitar so I write the majority of my music on the piano, because that's just what I love and what I do. Anyone who's ever played in a cafe these days will connect with the verses as I'm sure we've all experienced those audiences before. As for the chorus, its more just a statement on how you can't please everyone so you may as well just please yourself. The song is on my profile.

i think its cool that you put your writings to music. i was gettin the feeling that this was poetry corner..i dont know if half of these poems would even fit in a song well.

i dont think its possible or correct to judge a song on lyrics alone..and i dont think you can really judge lyrics unless you hear them in a song...the true emotion really comes from the music..the lyrics just elaborate, and give more power to the emotions...

i cant say im really feeling this one..but counting the spark was cool..it was a little much tho..but very cool

It gives me the feel of Billy Joel's -Piano Man...even if its in your song haha
I really liked it, its one of those timeless sorta sing-along songs.
The rhyming is very clever and intriguing, especially the Guns n roses part.
The only negative thing I have is the end of the chorus, and it isn't even that negative, as i read I just felt something would fit better on the end than "guitar" again. But now as i sing it in my head, it doesn't sound as odd as when its read.
Overall: great job, i'd love to hear it played with a piano
