my best friend clay finally found a drummer, and he found a guitarist too...clay also is a guitarist...he asked me to play bass for them...i have an acoustic bass and they play metal...like heavy...and i don't want to spend my money on an electric bass...so...should i get a bass or play acoustic for them...and is a bass really needed for just starting a band?

i know bass lets you feel the rhythm and is the structure, also drums, of a band/song...so?

what to do

should i buy an electric bass and amp or what?

i don't know what to do...cause he wants me to write songs too..but... :|

Do any of the members have access to an electric bass that you could use? Even if you don't have an amp, you could practise with your acoustic bass, gig with the borrowed electric, asking the other bands politely before the gig is you can use their amp.

This is assuming, of course, that you want to be in the band, and aren't just agreeing because your mate has asked. If you aren't going to commit, there isn't much point really.

How much do you know about metal? Do you listen to it and do you know how to play any metal or have an interest in learning some?

The reason I ask is to find out how committed to this project you are as if you are then I would suggest going going for a full electric but if your not then you might wanna reconsider. Does your acoustic bass have an input? You can probably still hook it into a P.A. if it does and then you would have a pseudo electric bass.

i've been playing for almost 4 years self taught and have reached a potential ahead of my lesson taught friend :P but...he has a different style being taught and all, but i've been playing metal from month 5 of guitar playing, at year 2 i got an acoustic which changed what i play, at year 3 i got an acoustic bass which i'm pretty good at, now at year 4 i play jazz, blues, classic rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, metal, and some acoustic alternative...my acoustic bass does have output and i wouldn't mind just putting it into a PA

i'm committed though, i just hate the fact that he desires to find a guitarist, when we were playing for almost 4 years together

it's kinda like he decided since we don't get to hang around much he will find someone close to his school to jam with

other than that he may just want to be in a band, he doesn't know basic music theory though xD so i tell him to play a D5 and he doesn't know what it is...other than that he's pretty good at guitar

TL;DR- yes i'm committed been playing 4 years and i play more than metal

I would just go through the PA then for now. It doesnt sound like your friend is quite sure what he wants anyways so no point in wasting some hard earned cash. Other than that it sounds like you would do well in a metal band. When you say your friend doesnt know much theory, does he know scales? It's quite difficult to write music if you don't have scales down.

Uhhh...

Do people play metal with acoustic guitars? >_>

I get what your saying but metal guitar tones are distorted where metal bass tones can be clean or have distortion.

You shouldn't be surprised, because that's the smart thing to do if you're trying to get a band together.

It makes much more sense to play with people who you can get together with regularly than people who you don't see very often and thus, don't get to write/rehearse with often.

Sure, you guys are great friends and in a perfect world things like that would work out, but if someone is serious about their band, then they have to put it over friendships or else they're just setting themselves up for trouble.
