Hey Guys, I'm wanting to purchase a white American Strat but I'm having a hard time with the olympic and arctic white color hues.

I like the white tone of John Mayers signature strat and is what I am after: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Artist-Series-John-Mayer-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar?sku=515036 This claims to be olympic white.

I've found a 62 Reissue on guitar center that says it is Olympic White http://used.guitarcenter.com/images/products/106036792_lg.jpg

According to Fender's color chart, this is Olympic White: http://www.fender.com/support/colorchart.php?show=white&color=6

Which has alot more cream tone than the John Mayer and 62 RI above.

62 RI: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-American-Vintage-62-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar?sku=510049

Does the 62 RI Olympic White have a brighter hue than the new Olympic Whites? Or is it just the photos fooling my eyes? The JM strat and 62 RI olympic whites do not look like the color chart at all.

What to do??

For whatever mysterious reason, Fender is not terribly consistent with color names. My Strat is the same color as the Jag on the chart but it's called "Arctic White." "Olympic White" is generally much brighter.

"Arctic" is not often seen on higher-end Fenders.

White is white.

Idiot is idiot

As mentioned before, Fender has always had inconsistencies with their colours. In the 50's and 60's, they just used whatever paint was available to them. I'm sure that they've gotten much more consistent since then, but I wouldn't be surprised to see variations of the same colour name. And depending on the base coat used, the grain/type of wood, and aging (among other variables), you can end up with a spectrum of "white".
