Get a peavey 6505+ 112 combo for £499 (if i shop arond i think i could get it for cheaper) new and then some 2x12 cab used (probably a marshall 1936 but other suggestions would be valuable)

or a peavey 5150 mark1 2x12 combo for £595 used

i'm leaning towards the 6505+ as it will be cost the same but i get a extension cab aswell. I also don't think i need the extra volume from 120 watts than 60watts will give me. Also the 6505+ should have a slightly better clean channel which i do need.

I'm also considering turning the 6505+ 112 into a head and ditching the speaker as i've never been keen on those sheffield speakers they use. anyone had any experience of this and have some tips?

Depends.

The 5150 will sound more raw and in your face than the 6505+, which is a bit smoother and more composed-sounding with separate EQs. A 2x12 combo is a complete pain in the **** to transport as well, whereas the 112 will be easier on your back.

As for turning it into a head, you should take the measurements, then measure about how much clearance you need for the tubes/transformer/etc, and add a couple inches, then build a separate head shell which you install the amp's chassis into. That way, if you ever want to re-sell the amp, you can just stick the 6505+ back into the combo and no one will ever know you had it in a head shell.

I wouldn't recommend the Marshall 1936, I'd instead look at a Framus 212, Orange 212 or Harley Benton G212 Vintage. They all come with Vintage 30 speakers.

My 5150 combo is now just a head. It was surprisingly easy to cut the speaker section off, and no alteration to the wood panel under the tubes was required. My lumbar region is eternally grateful for that particular mod. BTW, the 60 watt 5150/6505s push a 4x12 nicely.
