Let's see how good the Pit is.

I was listening to Rush's Freewill today and I was wondering if there are any more known songs which have specifically atheistic lyrics.

Come on, Rush can't be the only ones to write an atheist song.

Thoughts of a Dying Atheist - Muse
Imagine - John Lennon
Eternal Life - Jeff Buckley

Those are the first that come to mind

Porcupine Tree - Halo also has a bit a cynical edge about God...

This.

And check Streetlight Manifesto's "Somewhere In the Between Album" is almost entirely atheistic songs.
Check specifically:
We Will Fall Together
Somewhere in the Between
Down Down Down to Mephisto's Cafe
40 Days
But mainly the last two. Those are probably the most.

Bukowski, Wild Pack of Family Dogs, I Came as a Rat, Dark Center of the Universe, Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice on Ice Alright
All by Modest Mouse

The Germs- No God

Gogol Bordello - Supertheory of Supereverything and Your Country (the latter has a few lines about atheism)

Propagandhi - Haillie Salasse Up Your Ass, Ego Fum Papa, Natural Disasters

Subhumans - Religious Wars, No

Crass - Asylum (more a spoken word piece over guitar feedback)

The Spirit Carries On-Dream Theater. Best athiest song I know.

Aren't all the members of Dream Theater somewhat religious?

For that matter isn't Neil Peart an agnostic not an atheist? I guess technically that is still an atheist though.

Muse - Thoughts of Dying Athiest

In fact they have a few religion based songs: The Small Print, Megalomania, Apocalypse Please and Sing for Absolution.

The band are athiest/agnostic but a lot of the lyrics look at a different point of view. Some of their songs are anti-religious or science based too: Shrinking Universe, Exogenesis etc...

EDIT: Radiohead - Paranoid Android: Funny really, it suggests humanity is a bit messed up because either...

a) God doesn't exist
b) God messed up
c) God has a poor sense of humour

Oh snap I completely forgot the whole Heliocentric album by The Ocean. From what I've accumulated, they will be releasing a sort of sequel album to this one called Anthropocentric in October this year.

Why do you want to know atheist songs? Aren't you converting to Judaism or something?

Hmm, Apocalypse Please isn`t really atheistic, and do you know what The Small Print is about ? And SfA isn`t also really atheistic if you ask me...

I always thought that Faithless by Rush was one of the best songs concerning topics of atheism.

Tool - Opiate

More of a criticism of religiousness rather than promoting atheism though.

Also, Drowning Pool - Sermon, Godsmack - Bad Religion, A Perfect Circle - Judith

Apocalypse Please = Confirming religion with God by creating an apocalypse
The Small Print = Signing your soul to the devil
Sing for absolution = About achieving "absolution" or "enlightenment" by music or singing as opposed to through religion.

Not strictly athiestic as such, but Matt's an athiest and the songs all look at religion, sometimes questioning it

What an ace band.

But yeah like quite a few people in this thread, I came in to say Muse - ToaDA

Check out "God and Satan" by Biffy Clyro.

If you ask me, that's atheist. Questioning God and Satan, and religion as whole.

Cheers to anyone who has so far answered.

DT are I believe are somewhat religious. John Myung in particular is a practicing Christian and I beliece Petrucci to have been raised Catholic.

As for Neil Peart, it's tricky. His lyrics tend to be anti-organised religion but I don't believe even Freewill discredits the possibility of existence in A god of sorts.

@WillSwanson: I'm just interested in what atheist songs there are out there.

The Priest And The Matador by Senses Fail. Actually, a fair amount of their work, mostly that off of Still Searching, is about losing faith.
#37
I think that Where the Birds Always Sing by The Cure is really about there being no inherent justice in the world due to any god controlling the rights and wrongs.
Also, while we physically cease to exist when we die, we still live on in memories.
