HURLING! With the All Ireland hurling final in 2 hours nows the perfect time to start a thread on the worlds fastest sport, Hurling.

It's pretty big in England and America these days (or so I hear).

So who thinks Kilkenny can take the 5 in a row, or will Tipperary be the first team in 5 years to beat them?

Fuck knows, but they're brave guys.

Watched the shinty+hurling final of something or other involving Scotland and Ireland under-somethings cos my cousin and his mate were playing for Scotland, saw some Irish guy literally take a ball in the forehead and keep playing. Total nutters.

I always thought this was a huge hoax. I always thought it looked far too silly to be a real sport.

Yeah it's pretty bizarre. But oh well, it's basically hockey for psychos.

I'm sorry Coreysmonster, but you are american, and therefore come from the nation of American Football, and believe that this sport is too 'silly' to be real?

Is there any play in American football history that has lasted longer than a minute?

what in the world does that have anything to do with anything, you racist bastard?

Not all americans like football, you know.

And american football is 300 pound dudes crashing into each other, this sport is a bunch of guys in short shorts bouncing a ball on a stick.

Nice one, throw around the racist card so its meaning is diluted when it is actually valid.

My point is that as an American you would be more likely to recognise American Football as a sport than someone from another country.

I am of the opinion that American football is of a greater level of sillyness than Hurling, so the fact that you cannot imagine Hurling existed and therefore dismiss it as silly is, silly.

Hurling

I mean... do I even need to prove my point any further?
Dont get your australian knickers all tied up just because somebody thinks your sport is silly

Edit: In response to your edit, how in the f*cking f*ck does 300 pound 'dudes' crashing each other constitute a sport more than the level of agility, skill and balance required to run across a field with balancing a ball while people are chasing you with large, solid sticks.

why the 'dudes' part? Should I be calling them "maties" instead?

Because it looks friggin silly! I dont care how much skill is required, it looks about as silly as cup stacking.

Actually, I think you just disproved your point...

It all depends on what you're used to. Obviously you see "football" much more often than shinty, so you would think that. To me, the guys trying to look hard in shiny gold spandex is more ridiculous than what's basically a cross between football (soccer) and hockey

In response to my anger, who the f*ck are you to say it looks silly?

I have no problem with you saying you think its looks silly, but you can't just label a lifestyle of the entire lower half of Ireland as silly because you believe 300 pound monsters with a fitness level so low that they need two entire different teams to finish a match, and play is constantly stopped and started because they can't handle 5 minutes of consecutive running.

dude, I dont even like football. I think it looks less silly than hurling, thats all.
I'm not questioning the skill it takes to play it, I just think it looks funny as hell, that's all.

jesus, calm down. And way to generalise an entire sport, mr. kettle.

I agree, and that's basically how I feel about American football

And I'll be the first to admit hurling/shinty are pretty stupid looking sports as well

My point, in a half serious half joking way is that it isn't a generalisation because that is really what the entire sport is like.

But that was me being confrontational.

Well lets take a look at your broad generalisation of the nature of the sport, which is something I never did to Hurling. I only said the sport looks silly to me. I never said anything about the way it's played.

"300 pound monsters with a fitness level so low "

Contrary to popular belief, while yes, there are overweight, fat football players, The majority are huge beefcake muscle guys capable of incredible feats of strength, and small skinny guys who run at speeds that rival professional sprinters. I really wouldn't call that having a low level of fitness.

"that they need two entire different teams to finish a match, and play is constantly stopped and started because they can't handle 5 minutes of consecutive running."

Considering the fact that it's 5 minutes of sprinting at top speeds, and the fact that football matches can last a lot longer than other sports with set time limitations, it's understandable.
I mean, just look at soccer players at the end of extended play, they look half ready to collapse, and the physical limitation of ALL athletes is the reason soccer goes into 11-meter shots afterwards, because players cant run anymore.

So yeah, it was a generalisation. Stop being so butthurt because someone says your silly sport looks silly.

anyone in this thread arguing clearly hasn't got enough fresh air today. when i saw the word "racist" turn up i literally palmfaced.

If it utilises a big as **** stick that can potentially be used to bludgeon the opposing team to death, im in.

My uncle used to play for someone (I can't remember) but he taught me a bit a few years ago, so I've got a stick sitting in my garage now. My Granddad used to get given the balls you play it with from the local matches for some reason, and he gave them to me, so I've got a few match balls (or so I'm led to believe) sitting in my room.

I wouldn't say it's very big in my area of America, but there is definitely some following. I am taking an Irish Literature class at my school, and as an option for one of our projects, we can join a local league.

I think most people here would say it looks like violent, manly field hockey. But I would like to watch a game sometime.

Also watching it on tv is dam confusing since you can hardly see the ball

While I commend your school giving you the option of playing a sport that is played outside of America, I must ask, what strange kind of literature class has a project where you play sports?

Also, is hurling what this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8UBqpmqkxs is about, or some other use of the word hurlers?
